Dejounte Murray Returns and Starts for Pelicans in Loss to Raptors
Dejounte Murray made his return to the court in the New Orleans Pelicans' 119-93 loss to Toronto on Wednesday night. It marked his first game since fracturing his left hand during the season opener against Chicago on October 23. Murray played 25 minutes, starting in his usual role, and finished with 14 points, but his efforts weren't enough to prevent the Pelicans from extending their losing streak to six games.
Ahead of his return, Murray shared details about the personal matters that had kept him away from the team during the final days of the preseason. He revealed that his mother had suffered a stroke, which prompted him to step away from the team temporarily.
“It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray explained. He also reflected on his hand injury, saying it felt like a sign from God to stay with his mother.
“My priority was my mother. I wasn’t really focused on my recovery,” he added.
Thankfully, Murray’s mother has recovered well, and he is now back, fully healthy and ready to contribute. “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching,” Murray said with determination. “I’m ready to compete and bring that winning spirit.”
The Pelicans have been severely impacted by injuries this season, with several key players sidelined. Zion Williamson has missed 12 games, including 11 due to a hamstring injury. Herb Jones is out with a shoulder strain, and Brandon Ingram has also missed time with calf soreness.
Despite the setbacks, Murray remains optimistic. "I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who registered 14 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds in his season debut. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys."
Murray, who was acquired in an offseason trade from the Atlanta Hawks, brings a wealth of experience to the Pelicans. Over his eight NBA seasons, he has averaged 15.4 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.8 rebounds.
