NBA Suspends Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson for 25 Games
The NBA has suspended Tristan Thompson, the center for the Cleveland Cavaliers, for 25 games without pay. The suspension comes as a result of Thompson violating the league's anti-drug policy. According to the NBA, Thompson, who is 32 years old, tested positive for ibutamoren, a growth hormone, as well as SARM LGD-4033, a substance commonly used by bodybuilders and weightlifters to enhance muscle growth.
Thompson's suspension will commence on Wednesday, coinciding with the Cavaliers' game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He will be eligible to return to the court on March 16 when the Cavaliers face the Houston Rockets.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have released a statement expressing their full support for the NBA's anti-drug program and standing behind Tristan Thompson during his suspension. The team acknowledged their disappointment in the news and recognized that Thompson's absence from game action will impact the team.
During his suspension, Thompson will be allowed to travel and participate in team practices. The only stipulation is that he must leave the arena at least two hours prior to tipoff for any games.
Thompson, a Canadian player, is currently in his second stint with the Cavaliers. He was originally drafted by the team with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Standing at 6-foot-11, Thompson has become a beloved figure in Cleveland. He was a part of the Cavaliers' 2016 NBA championship-winning team, which marked the city's first major professional sports title since 1964.
After spending nine seasons with the Cavaliers, Thompson has also played for the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers. The Cavaliers re-signed him as a free agent before the current season. In his limited playing time, he is averaging 3.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 12 minutes per game.
The Cavaliers have been experiencing success recently, having won eight consecutive games.
