Monty Williams boasts a decade of coaching experience in the NBA.

The Detroit Pistons have decided to dismiss coach Monty Williams after just one season with the franchise. Pistons owner Tom Gores expressed gratitude for Williams' dedication but emphasized the need for a new direction following a thorough assessment of the team's performance.

Williams, who finished with a record of 14-68 during the 2023-24 season, had a challenging tenure with Detroit, which marked the worst record in the NBA that year. This season followed another tough campaign where the Pistons won fewer than 20 games. Williams still has a reported five years and over $65 million remaining on his contract.

Williams was appointed on June 2 last year after Dwane Casey stepped down to join the front office. Casey, who previously led the Pistons to the playoffs in 2019, left Williams to inherit a team struggling to recapture past successes. Despite Detroit's storied history with three NBA championships, the team has only made two playoff appearances in the past 14 years, facing significant challenges in returning to postseason contention.

The Pistons are currently undergoing significant changes, including a restructuring in the front office. They recently parted ways with GM Troy Weaver and appointed Trajan Langdon as the new president of basketball operations. Langdon, previously with the New Orleans Pelicans, brings experience in team management and aims to guide Detroit through its rebuilding phase.

Looking ahead, the Pistons hold the No. 5 pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft, continuing their efforts to rebuild around young talents like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson, Isaiah Stewart, and Jaden Ivey. The team is focused on leveraging its cap space and potential contract extensions to strengthen the roster and improve performance next season.

Detroit's coaching vacancy is one of three currently open in the NBA, alongside the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, highlighting a period of transition and rebuilding across the league.
