In the afternoon of August 8, 2022, The Bild newspaper released a picture of the forward and his girlfriend arriving at Halle airport. The 26-year-old will undergo a medical before signing with RB Leipzig, two years after he left the team to play in England. The deal could be publicly disclosed by Wednesday.

Chelsea agreed to the €20m guaranteed fee plus add-ons contract, which is less than half of the original price of $55.6 million that they paid in 2020 to sell the German striker. The Stamford Bridge squad initially desired a season-long loan with a buy option, but the negotiation between the two clubs changed quickly. A permanent deal has been reached for the forward.

In order to secure a starting point in Germany’s international team, Timo Werner agreed to take a 50 percent pay cut and return to his former club to get regular game time. In Chelsea’s shirt, the 26-year-old has scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues. He also played a pivotal role in helping Chelsea win the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League trophy.
