Rangnick kept the promise to experiment with the new squad

  • Man United line-up: Greenwood, Van De Beek, Henderson (Heaton 68’), Shaw (Mengi 61’), Bailly, Wan-Bissaka, Matic, Mata (Savage 89’), Diallo (Shoretire 68’), Lingard (Iqbal 89’), Elanga.
  • Young Boys line-up: Faivre, Siebatcheu, Maceiras, Ngamaleu, Camara (Lauper 77’), Lustenberger, Lefort (Kanga 62’), Aebischer (Sierro 62’), Martins, Rieder, Elia (Maier 87’).

Ralf Rangnick surprised football fans by providing a totally new squad for this last Champions League group stage game against Young Boys. Before the match, he revealed that all the stars and key members would not show up in this game, and he really kept his words.

Since the club are certainly going to lead Group F no matter what the result is, Rangnick used completely reserved players as well as those who have just recovered from injuries. The German manager also used all the five substitutions in the second half, and Man United, therefore, used a teenage player in a Champions League game for the first time.

Nemanja Matic also wore the captain armband for the first time, and Juan Mata just had his second game since the beginning of this Champions League campaign.

Man United couldn't win Young Boys at Old Trafford

In the first leg against Young Boys, Man United had a close 2-1 loss on the away ground although they were the team that had the opening goal by Cristiano Ronaldo. In this home leg, they still couldn’t win against the visitors with this new squad, but ended up with a humble draw instead.

The Red Devils were once again the team that had the lead with a goal from young player Mason Greenwood in the 9th minute. From a nice pass of Luke Shaw, Greenwood had a beautiful bicycle kick right in the first competing minutes of the game. This has made Greenwood the first under-21 Man United player who scored the most goals (eight) in Champions League history.

In the 34th minute, Man United had a really good chance for their second goal, but Mata lost it. Young Boys had a brilliant equalizing goal in the last minutes of the first half. Matic and Van de Beek were the cause of this goal when they carelessly passed the ball and Fabian Rieder from Young Boys took this chance to make a really nice shot that defeated Dean Hendeson

MU started to play diffidently before the first half ended after the goal from the rival. In the second half, despite many efforts from both clubs, no more goals were scored under the heavy rain. Man United and Young Boys ended up with a 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils are losing their manner in both the Premier League and Champions League, but since group F doesn't contain many strong teams, they are luckily still the leading team with 11 points after three wins, two draws, and one loss in their six Champions League group stage games.

Meanwhile, Young Boys are not even qualified for the Europa League by standing at the bottom of the group. Their journey in this season of the UEFA Champions League officially ended. This has also been the highest finish of this Swiss club since the Champions League changed its name from European Cup to UEFA Champions League.
