About FA Trophy

This section will equip you with a strong foundation of the FA Trophy competition. You will understand every step on the way to the final.

What is FA Trophy?

FA Trophy is the short way to call the Football Association Challenge Trophy. This is a men’s football cup competition which was founded in 1969. It was named after the English Football Association (the FA). The FA Trophy gathers hundreds of non-league or semi-professional clubs, which were 295 clubs participating in the 2018-2019 season.

FA Trophy’s format

This is a knockout competition and teams will be paired by being randomly drawn. However, since there is such a huge number of participants at the beginning, the draws for the qualifying rounds and the first round proper will be divided into regions to reduce teams’ travel costs.

The way to the FA Trophy final will have to go through numerous rounds, including several preliminary rounds, three qualifying rounds, five rounds proper, quarterfinals, semifinals, and last but not least, the final round.

Teams from the higher divisions are able to skip the early rounds thanks to the byes they receive. So that means the higher ranked they are, the later round they have to take part in.

Who has won the FA Trophy the most?

The title for the most successful team in the FA Trophy tournament is shared among three clubs with three times being the champion for each. They are Scarborough, Woking, and Telford United. Despite being established for more than 50 years, the highest record is only three times winning the FA Trophy titles. This can tell us that the FA Trophy is relatively less competitive due to the equal abilities among clubs.
