How does Ligue 1 work?

Round-robin is literally the format that Ligue and most top football divisions follow. The competition comprises 20 professional football clubs throughout France, playing under two-legged ties. Thereby, each of them will have to participate in 38 matches in total, half at home ground and a half away.

By winning a match, teams will receive three points, the losing teams obtain zero points. If the match finishes tied, two participants will be awarded one point equally. 

Ultimately, the team that gathers the most points will be victorious. In case several clubs possess the same result, then the goals difference, goals scored, and a series of playoffs if necessary will be considered to determine the final winner. 

The top three teams will qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the fourth-ranked team is promoted to the Europa League, while the bottom three teams are relegated to Ligue 2.
