Let’s work on the Bundesliga simplification in this part before we head into the current table of this football tournament in the 2020-2021 season. 

What is the Bundesliga?

The Bundesliga is the highest football tier in Germany. It is sometimes referred to as the Fußball-Bundesliga, or 1. Bundesliga. This competition is held annually from August to May, organized by the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). Along with the most prestigious competitions: Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1, this German football league makes up a “Big Five” in the European football system.

How does the Bundesliga work?

The Bundesliga works under the round-robin format. There are only 18 teams joining this competition, so each team will have to play 34 matches against the rest clubs, once at home and once away. The whole contest comprises 306 games, divided into 34 matchdays (nine matches per round). 

The aggregate points of each team will decide whether they can crown the champion or not. Initially, a club received two points for winning a single match, one for a draw, and zero for a defeat. Since the 1995-96 season, the winning points have been upgraded to three, while the rest rules have been kept the same. 

If there is more than one team end up level on points, the tiebreaker rules are then applied in the following order: 

1. Goal difference for the entire season

2. Total goals scored for the entire season

3. Head-to-head results (total points)

4. Head-to-head goals scored

5. Head-to-head away goals scored

6. Total away goals scored for the entire season

In case these criteria still cannot break the tie, a single match will be held at a neutral ground to determine the champion of the Bundesliga. 

Promotion and Relegation

The Bundesliga has a close connection with the 2. Bundesliga through the Promotion and Relegation system. Accordingly, the bottom two teams in the Bundesliga will be relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, and be replaced by the top two teams from that league.

The team that finished the Bundesliga at 16th position will play two-legged ties with the third-placed team in the 2. Bundesliga to find out the winner, which will join the Bundesliga next year, and the loser will play in the lower tier. 

Regarding the top teams, 1st-4th placed teams are qualified for the Group stage of the UEFA Champions League. 5th place is promoted to the Group stage of UEFA Europa League, and 6th place will go into the third qualifying round of Europa League. 

What is the 2020-2021 Bundesliga table?

Accordingly, Bayern Munich or Bayern Munchen is leading the competition with 61 points in total, four points ahead of the second-placed team, which is RB Leipzig. There is no surprise for these standings as Bayern is long known as one of the most successful clubs in German and Europe with a huge achievement board in their career. 

Which team has won the most Bundesliga titles?

There is nobody else but Bayern Munich is the strongest German team who won the most Bundesliga titles since its foundation. Hans-Dieter Flick’s boys have been crowned the champion 29 times and are currently holding the Bundesliga Meisterschale (championship shield) for winning the 2019-2020 season.
