What is Ligue 1?

Ligue 1 is the highest tier in the French football system. It belongs to the “Big Five” of European football, along with the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, and Serie A. This competition was founded in 1930 but officially got its current name in 2002, and is organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). 

Like other top divisions in Europe, Ligue 1 is annually held in the season of football, between August to May to satisfy millions of fanatics worldwide every single year.

Ligue 1’s format

Ligue 1 is also a round-robin tournament. It gathers 20 football teams in France every year to bring out the most successful with the highest position and award. Each team will meet 19 other clubs twice, once at home and once away. 

Three points will be awarded to the team who wins a single match, one point for both teams if the match ends up tied, and the defeated team receives zero points. Eventually, the team who finished the whole competition with the highest aggregate points will triumph. In case the drawn match happens, the following tiebreaker rules will be applied:

• Goals difference
• Goals scored
• A series of playoffs

When the final results are settled down, the top three teams in Ligue 1 will be promoted to the UCL (the top two clubs qualify for the group phase and the third one goes directly to the third qualifying round). The fourth-placed team is automatically sent to the Europa League. Regarding the bottom teams, the three lowest-ranked clubs will be relegated to French Ligue 2.
