World Cup qualifying: all you need to know

So the longest stage in a World Cup season is the World Cup qualification. Let’s learn some basic things about this biggest cup competition and how teams from the UEFA are divided to meet each other in the qualifying rounds of the World Cup in the following part.

What is World Cup qualifying?

Every entrant (except for the host) must participate in the World Cup qualifying stage to determine if they can be chosen and qualified for the final tournament. The AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (European Union) are the six major continental football regions that will take part in every World Cup.

The key goal of World Cup qualification is to reduce the number of teams competing in the tournament. with more than 200 clubs from the beginning, there will be only 32 teams officially race in the final tournament. While the biggest cup is held every four years, the World Cup qualifying phase is held in the three years between two World Cup seasons.

How does World Cup qualifying work in Europe?

The qualifying round takes place in two stages:

Group stage

Teams will be divided into ten groups of five or six (the four teams that qualified for the UEFA Nations League finals in the previous season will be in the smaller groups). The top ten teams in ten groups are ready for the next World Cup stage.

Play-offs

The ten group runners-up and the two best group winners from the UEFA Nations League will be drawn into three play-off paths and compete with each other in single-leg ties. Three paths winners will also have tickets to the World Cup.
