Everton vs. Brighton hightlight

Brighton began 2023 with a crushing 4-1 victory at Goodison Park, turning up the heat on Everton manager Frank Lampard, who is under fire. The Toffees have now won only once in their last 10 games and are currently ranked 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone despite the fact that the four clubs behind them have all played one fewer game.

But six minutes after the restart, Everton just gave up. Young striker Evan Ferguson opened the scoring on his complete Premier League debut before Solly March added a third and Pascal Gross scored a fourth thanks to Idrissa Gueye's stunning blunder. The overwhelming victory allowed Brighton to go back up to seventh despite Demarai Gray's late consolation penalty.

Everton vs. Brighton Summary

Everton appeared to be in it from the start, maybe encouraged by their recent draw with Manchester City. Although Robert Sanchez made a superb save to stop Alex Iwobi and Tom Davies immediately after, their high press was fierce and almost helped them grab the lead within the first 10 minutes. However, Brighton immediately started to take command of the match. When Mitoma headed March's lovely hanging ball well wide of the goal and then swiftly edged in ahead rightfully, they sent out a warning message.

Japanese international Mitoma was the recipient of a cross-field pass from Moises Caicedo. After evading Nathan Patterson on the left side of the box with his initial touch, Mitoma drifted across the area before firing a shot that went through James Tarkowski's knees and into the goal. When Mitoma's deflected cross was finally connected with by 18-year-old Ferguson, it was almost two. Ferguson's first-time effort hit the base of the left-hand post. Everton occasionally showed promising glimpses with their build-up play. Nevertheless, it frequently turned laborious as Dominic Calvert-Lewin found himself in isolation and the home crowd grew impatient with the attack's lack of energy.

Ferguson showed he is not intimidated playing in the top division at his young age by scoring his first Premier League goal in the loss to Arsenal on New Year's Eve. Then, just seconds after sending a shot narrowly over the bar, he scored his second goal in as many games by slotting in after great work from Jeremy Sarmiento to squeeze a cross into his path under pressure. That quieted Goodison, but March hushed the storied old stadium minutes later when Ferguson set him up and allowed him to take several uncontested touches before firing a shot past a dazed Jordan Pickford.

Before the hour mark, the boos started to erupt as Gross pounced on Gueye's awful ball back towards his own goal. Gross then surged forward before deftly clipping a fourth into the goal. Everton had a chance to recover when Sanchez gave away a foolish penalty in stoppage time, but even though Gray smashed home in anger, it couldn't undo the humiliation for the Toffees.
