On the morning of February 27th, local time in Vietnam, head coach Philippe Troussier shared his thoughts after officially signing a contract to lead the Vietnamese national team. Speaking from the hot seat as head coach for the first time, Troussier expressed his joy and pride in being reunited with the team and taking on the task of leading the Vietnamese national team. He is thrilled to return to the country that he cherishes after his work there three years ago.

Head coach Troussier signs official contract to lead Vietnam National Team

He fully understands the immense importance of the job he has taken on and is determined to focus completely on the tasks at hand. Troussier understands that his predecessor, Park Hang Seo, left behind a team with a strong competitive edge, and he plans to use his knowledge of the Vietnamese national team and the levels of competition to propel them forward.

Upcoming competitions, such as the SEA Games in May, the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, the World Cup 2026 qualifiers at the end of the year, and the Asian Cup 2024, are all opportunities for the Vietnamese national team to create a foundation for further development. FIFA's expansion of the World Cup format offers the Vietnamese team the chance to secure a spot.

According to Troussier, "The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification format offers an opportunity for the Vietnamese team to participate. This is our biggest goal that we are all working towards. Of course, it is an ambitious goal, but it is achievable, and we will work towards it together. We want to repay the trust of Vietnamese football fans."

Troussier also emphasized that there will be challenges ahead, and he is ready to face them. "There will be moments of joy, and there will be sad times. That's football. Let's be strong and overcome all of them, if all factors from the members of Vietnamese football are united in one direction, from the Federation, clubs, players."

He hopes to connect everyone with football, as it is a sport that creates positive energy and great motivation. Troussier is well-versed in the work he has done in Japan, Qatar, and China and believes that communication and understanding are key to success.

Coach Troussier discusses plans with VFF leadership

As someone who has led eight different national teams worldwide, Troussier has learned a great deal from his experiences. He has participated in World Cups, Olympics, and African Cup tournaments, with a total of over 200 international matches. Leading the Vietnamese national team is a challenge, and he will use his experience to share his insights and suggestions with the VFF leadership and players to elevate Vietnamese football to new heights.

Tran Anh Tu, VFF Vice President, stated, "The selection of the head coach is an essential factor that the VFF prepared for carefully through a rigorous process. VFF has signed a contract with a term of over 3 years. This is a result agreed upon by all parties. With many years of experience leading teams around the world and two years of working in Vietnam, Troussier will help the Vietnamese national team achieve its goals in the region and on the continent. We wish Philippe Troussier success in his new job in Vietnam."

Troussier spent time working in Vietnam from 2018 to 2021, serving as Technical Director of PVF Center and later leading the Vietnamese U19 national team. The current contract between VFF and the 67-year-old French coach is for three years. With his confirmed abilities and extensive experience, Troussier is expected to lead the Vietnamese national team to new heights and achieve the goals set out.

Speaking more about the goals of Vietnamese football, Tran Anh Tu emphasized, "The VFF has implemented plans to serve the goal of bringing Vietnamese football into the top 10 in Asia and participating in the World Cup 2026, along with the task of finding a new head coach for the national team after Park Hang Seo's contract ends.

The VFF believes that the French strategist will continue and further develop the achievements of Vietnamese football in the past to meet the expectations of fans across the country."
