Man United vs Charlton Highlights

Marcus Rashford scored twice in a drastically different by defeating Charlton 3-0 at Old Trafford, Manchester United extended their winning streak to eight games in a row across all competitions and advanced to the Carabao Cup semifinals. Following Friday's FA Cup victory over Everton, United manager Erik ten Hag made eight changes and gave 17-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo his debut. However, this did not derail his team's momentum as second-half substitute Marcus Rashford continued his stellar play with a late double (90, 94).

In his impressive cameo, the England international, who has now scored 15 goals this season, scored for the sixth straight game and the eighth time in a row at Old Trafford. Earlier, Antony's fine left-footed long-range strike had given United the lead (21). League One team prior to Rashford's goals in the second half, Charlton, who had eliminated Brighton in the previous round, had the chance to tie the score, but they lacked quality in the final third, allowing the hosts to win for the ninth time in a row at Old Trafford.

Man United vs Charlton Summary

Only as the game entered stoppage time did United ensure their place in the semifinals, but it might have been more convincing had they converted on one of the early opportunities that superstar Alejandro Garnacho produced. After cutting inside from the byline, the Argentine created a chance for Diogo Dalot, but the defender, who had to leave the game in the first half due to injury, misfired from a good position. Then, twice, Garnacho attempted to strike out on his own. The first time, after cutting in and firing a shot just wide, he dragged his attempt wide. However, United scored their first goal in the 21st minute from the right. They moved the ball around the field before Fred found Antony, who created space with his left foot of choice before beating Ashley Maynard-Brewer to the top corner.

Ten minutes before halftime, the impressive Fred saw his 30-yard free-kick crash into a post while Maynard-Brewer was watching. The hosts were just inches away from doubling their advantage. Ahead of the break, Charlton had fought valiantly and had the best spell of the game thanks to 9,000 traveling supporters and manager Dean Holden, a devoted United supporter. Albie Morgan had whipped a free-kick wide, and Tom Heaton had to make a diving save to keep Corey Blackett-Taylor from converting a low cross from Sean Clare.

The opposition came out strong in the second half as well, and 76 seconds after the break, Scott Fraser capitalized on Miles Leaburn's flick-on but missed the target with a left-footed shot. Anthony Elanga's goal was disallowed for a blatant offside, but Charlton persisted in pressing, and after an hour, Ten Hag brought on Rashford, Casemiro, and Christian Eriksen as a result of their impact.

The seasoned trio helped United take control of the game, and they had opportunities to end it as Garnacho brought out a flying save from Maynard-Brewer and Eriksen's effort was blocked by the latter after getting low. After Rashford had been set up by debutant Facundo Pellistri in the 90th minute, the in-form forward eventually scored the second to seal the victory after Casemiro had put him in scoring position. After winning the Carabao Cup in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, United has advanced to the semifinals for the third time in six seasons.
