Possessing many bright faces for their squad, Belgium is one of the “heaviest” opponents in Euro 2020. After the long postponement of the Euro 2020 last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the game is getting more anxious than ever when returning this year.

Belgium national team’s manager

Coach: Roberto Martinez

  • Club: Belgium national team

Martinez is a Spanish manager who used to play as a defensive midfielder for Spanish clubs in the first years of his senior career, then he moved to English clubs to join the League One and Championship competitions in this country. Martinez ended his playing career at the age of 33 when he felt like not being able to be a manager and player at the same time.

He started his managerial career in 2007 and led his first club Swansea City to win League One in the first season he was in charge. He was also the League One Manager of the Year this season and Manager of the Month in October. After that, Martinez was the manager of Wigan Athletic with the FA Cup title in the 2012-13 season. From 2013 to 2016, he was the head coach of Premier League club Everton and on 3 August 2016, he officially became the manager of the Belgium national team. He led the team to third place in the 2018 World Cup, receiving the Belgian Sports Coach of the Year and FIFA Men’s Coach nomination.

Goalkeeper

 

1. Thibaut Courtois

Having Thibaut in the squad, the Belgium national team is like double in strength. Not only with an impressive height, but he is also a skillful goalkeeper with numerous honors in his career. Thibaut was trained in Genk for 10 years and played as a professional goalkeeper for this club in three seasons of the Belgian Pro League, keeping 14 clean sheets for Genk.

He then played for other giants in European football, like Chelsea from 2011 to 2018 with two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one Football League Cup. In the period of 2011-2014, he was loaned to La Liga club Atletico Madrid with numerous honors in his time. He made his debut for another La Liga club Real Madrid on 1 September 2018 in a 4-1 win over CD Leganes. He proudly received plenty of Golden Glove and Goalkeeper of the Year awards or even Goalkeeper of the Decade (2011-2020).

 

2. Simon Mignolet

On 17 June 2010, it was announced that Simon signed a five-year contract with League One club Sunderland for a fee of £2 million. He kept playing for another English club in the prestigious Premier League from 2013 to 2019, with 204 games in total. 

He has played for his country’s club Brugge since late 2019 with 91 appearances so far. Mignolet was also part of all youth levels of the national squad from 2003. He made his debut for the national team in a 2-0 win over Austria on 25 March 2011. 

 

3. Mats Selz

Mats Selz, who received the Belgian Professional Goalkeeper of the Year in the 2015-16 season, is currently playing for Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and the Belgium national team for the Euro 2020. He was the goalkeeper for two Belgian Pro League clubs, Lierse and Gent in three seasons each. 

He played for the EFL Championship club Newcastle United in the 2016-17 season and was loaned to Anderlecht the next season. On 27 July 2018, Selz was transferred to the French club Strasbourg for a fee of £3.5 million. He has been called up for the national team in May 2021 for the rescheduled Euro 2020 but actually played for the U17, U18, U19, and U21 squads long ago. 

Defender

 

4. Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen mainly plays as a central defender, but he can be used as a left-back too. He spent his youth career in three clubs, and the last club where he also made his first professional debut was a Netherland club Ajax. Six seasons with this club were also the peak in his senior career, with 28 goals within 220 Eredivisie matches. Vertonghen also received the AFC Ajax Talent of the Year in 2007-08 and Player of the Year in 2011-12, as well as Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2012. He also had a long period playing for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and made 12 goals in 315 appearances. In March 2013, he was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month.

5. Toby Alderweireld

He moved to Atletico Madrid to play in the 2013-14 La Liga and then was loaned to Premier League club Southampton the next season. 6. Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen was trained in the Dutch club Ajax and in his senior career, he played for numerous clubs in Europe but has ended up with a Japanese club since 2019. He used to play for Arsenal in the top-flight Premier League and for Barca in four seasons of La Liga, where they won all four titles.

On 27 July 2019, he joined Vissel Kobe to play in the highest division of Japanese football, the J1 League, and has only scored one goal in the last season. Vermaelen has scored a total of 28 goals in his club career so far, and also made 82 international caps with the national team. He has made one goal in the Euro 2020 qualification for Belgium in a 4-0 win against Scotland.

 

7. Dedryck Boyata

Boyata spent his youth career in a local club and then moved to the youth side of Manchester City in 2006. He made his first professional debut for Man City in the FA Cup match against Middlesbrough in 2009. He was also named young player of the 2009-10 Premier League.

He was loaned to Bolton Wanderers and Twente on a season-long deal in 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively. The most successful period in his senior career was in Scottish club Celtic. He joined four seasons of the Scottish Premiership and scored a total of 15 goals. In May 2019, it was announced that Boyata was sent to Bundesliga club Hertha BSC for a free transfer. He also played for the national U19 and U21 squads before being selected for the national team in 2010. In 2018, the Belgium national team reached third place in the FIFA World Cup. 

 

8. Jason Denayer

9. Leander Dendoncker

Dendoncker made his first senior debut for Anderlecht in July 2013 and scored 11 goals for this club within 171 games in the Belgian Pro League. 

He moved to England and was loaned to Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2018-19 season. He has started officially playing for this English club since the 2019-20 season and until now, Dendoncker has made nine goals in 120 Premier League matches. He was also called up for the national team in 2015 after playing for U16, U17, U19, and U21 national squads.

 

10. Timothy Castagne

This footballer can be played as a right-back or left-back, so he is in charge of the full-back in the Premier League club Leicester City and the Belgium national team. After being trained three years in Genk, Castagne made his first professional debut for this club in the Belgian Pro League match against Club Brugge on 14 September 2014 and stayed with Genk until 2017. 

He played for Serie A club Atalanta in the next three seasons and scored a total of eight goals. He started playing football very soon, when he was five, in a local academy club RUS Saint-Ode. He spent three youth years in Virton before making his first professional debut for this club in 2009. He eventually scored 16 goals for Virton in three seasons of the second and third divisions. He was loaned to Bundesliga club Werder Bremen on a season-long deal, but he successfully scored 10 goals in just 34 games. Jeremy is currently the youngest footballer in the squad of Belgium in Euro 2020. He is also the forward for Ligue 1 club Rennes, which he has just signed a five-year contract with for a fee of €26 million. 

He played for Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League prior and scored six goals in 37 appearances with the club. He was also in the squad of U15, U16, U17, and U21 before being chosen for the Belgian national team on 5 September 2020. He made his international debut in the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.

After that, he played on season-long deals for different clubs in the lower division of the Belgium football league, and on 26 June 2016, he was officially announced to play in the Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. He has scored 10 goals in two seasons of the Premier League. Trossard was called up for the national team in 2018 but until 2020, he made his first international debut in a Nations League match against Denmark.
