Hjulmand is a former Denmark player who had only 11 years playing as a footballer in his senior career and was forced to retire after a knee injury in 1998. He also led his second club Nordsjælland to their first Danish Superliga title in 2011-12. He became the head coach of the Denmark national team on 1 July 2020.
