What is the Italy squad for the Euro 2021?

Betimate takes a look at the squad of Italy national team in the upcoming Euro 2021. Let's figure out the familiar faces in other clubs who will represent Italy in this prestigious competition.

The Italy national team represents for the whole country to join the Euro 2020, which was suspended in the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The qualifiers have been going on and years and the final round is awaiting ahead. Let's figure out the Italy national team's squad for this season of Euro.

1. Coach: Roberto Mancini

Roberto Mancini, who is called II Mancio, is currently the manager of the Italy national team. The club competes in the UEFA European Championship (Euros), the primary association football competition in Europe. During his time as a forward, Mancini was one of the best forwards at Sampdoria, which won the prestigious Serie A, four Coppa Italia titles, and one European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Roberto ended his playing career in 2001 with a total of 738 appearances and 201 goals. He became an assistant to the Swedish football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson at Lazio after that. He was then in charge of many giant football clubs in Europe: Inter Milan from 2004-2008, Man City from 2009-2013, Galatasaray from 2013-2014, returned to Inter Milan in the next two years, Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2017-2018, and the Italy national team since 2018 to the present. He was the most successful manager of Inter Milan and helped them to win three consecutive Serie A titles and a record of 17 unbeaten league games in a row.

Gianluigi Donnarumma is the youngest goalkeeper in Italy. He soon started his football career because at the age of four, Donnarumma grew up with the CLub Napoli in his native region. When he turned 14 in 2013, he officially played for Serie A club Milan for a fee of €250,000. Two years later, Donnarumma signed the first professional contract with Milan for four years. 

He saved Milan to win the 2016 Supercoppa Italiana by the 4-3 penalty shoot-out. Despite his young age, during six seasons with A.C.Milan, Donnarumma has made 251 appearances, kept 88 clean sheets, and helped this Italian club to reach the qualification for the Champions League for the first time since 2014. He is one of the most promising young footballers of his generation and is getting ready for the later Euro 2021.

Alex Meret started his career at the age of 10 in an amateur club Donatello Calcio. During his club career, Meret had 125 appearances in three clubs: Udinese, SPAL, and Napoli. He received the Goalkeeper of the Year award in the 2014-15 Primavera Girone B and the 2016-17 Serie B.

Salvatore Sirigu is a professional goalkeeper for Torino which competes in Serie A and the Italy national team. He began his youth career in 2002 and ended in 2007 within two clubs, Venezia and Palermo. 

Sirigu spent six years from 2011 to 2017 playing in the top-notch club Paris Saint-Germain and he was voted as the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year two times in two consecutive seasons 2012-13 and 2013-14. In 2017, Sirigu officially signed a contract with Torino on a free transfer, according to the club. He has played as a goalkeeper for Torino since then with the number 39. Francesco Acerbi is a professional player that is currently responsible for the central defender position in the Italy national team and a Serie A club Lazio. In his club career, Acerbi has played for several Italian clubs from the lower divisions to the top tiers like the Serie B and Serie A, in a total of 445 appearances and 23 goals.

During this time in Lazio, he and his teammates won the Coppa Italia in the 2018-19 season and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2019. Alessandro Bastoni is a son of a football manager, this has nurtured his passion for football since he was a little boy. At the age of 7, he started his youth career in the youth side of Serie A club, Atalanta. In 2016, he officially played as a professional defender for Atalanta, and the first game after his debut was a success over Genoa in the Coppa Italia by 3-0.

Alessandro Bastoni signed a contract with Inter Milan for €31 million on 31 August 2017. During his time in three clubs, Atalanta, Parma, and Inter Milan, Bastoni played in 107 matches and had four goals, including three for Inter Milan in the 2019-20 Serie A. He used to join all levels of Italy squads, from U15 to U19, and in recent 2020, he has started playing in the Italy national team and in the squad of the Euro 2021. However, on 6 October 2020, it was announced that Bastoni’s test was positive for COVID-19 although he didn’t have any symptoms. Hopefully, nothing happened with this guy so that we can expect more from him in the upcoming Euro.

7. Defender: Leonardo Bonucci

Leonardo Bonucci is currently a center-back and a vice-captain of both the top-flight club in Italy, Juventus, and the Italy national team. He first joined the Viterbese in the youth career in 2004 and started his professional senior career next year. Bonucci used to play for Inter Milan and A.C. Milan too but now only stays with Juventus since 2010 and returned in 2018, after spending one year in Milan from 2017 to 2018.

During his time in Inter Milan, Juventus, and the Italy national team, Bonucci, and his team has achieved plenty of honors. Inter Milan won one Serie A title and Coppa Italia Primavera in 2005-06 and a Campionato Nazionale Primavera in 2007. Juventus successfully won six consecutive Serie A titles from 2011 to 2017, and two more titles in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons; four Coppa Italia trophies, and five Supercoppa Italiana titles.

Bonucci has also received plenty of personal awards, such as the Serie A Footballer of the Year in the 2015-16 season, Ballon d'Or nominee in 2017, and an abundance of team awards.

8. Defender: Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini is a professional who has been the captain and defender of the top-notch Italian club Juventus, and he is also playing as the centre-back, or sometimes left-back for the Italy national team. During his club career, Chiellini and his first club Livorno won the Serie C1 in the 2001-02 season, and then his career was officially brightened when he played as a part of Juventus. The club won nine consecutive Serie A from 2012 to 2020, and four consecutive Coppa Italia titles, as well as four Supercoppa Italiana titles. 

It was not a surprise that he was called three times for the Serie A Defender of the Year in three consecutive years, 2008, 2009, and 2010 along with the Serie A Team of the Year award five times for Juventus. He scored a total of 43 goals in 645 appearances in his club career. With 107 matches with the Italy national team since 2004, Chiellini is the seventh-highest appearance holder in Italy. The national team became the runner-up of the UEFA European Championship (or Euro) in 2012 and finished in third place in the FIFA Confederations Cup next year.

9. Defender: Giovanni Di Lorenzo

Giovanni Di Lorenzo is a professional footballer who is playing for the Serie A club Napoli and the Italy national team as a right-back. He started his football career at the age of 11, in the youth side of Lucchese club from 2004 to 2009. After that, Lorenzo spent six years in Reggina, including one year playing in the academy club before moving to the senior career with this club. 

He was also loaned to Cuneo during the time playing for Reggina, then Matera in the period of 2015-2017, and Empoli from 2017-2019 before sticking with Napoli in 2019. On 7 June 2019, Giovanni Di Lorenzo signed a contract with Napoli for €8 million. Together with Napoli, they won the Coppa Italia in the 2019-20 season. He played for U20 and U21 of the Italy squad before starting his national career in 2019.

Alessandro Florenzi is a professional footballer who is currently playing for three teams and clubs as a right-back. He is under contract with Roma and the Italy national team, and on loan with the prestigious Germain club PSG. He grew in the academy club of Atletico Acilia when he was only four until he turned 10. Florenzi then played for Lodigiani and Roma. As a product of Roma youth academy, he made his debut in senior Roma in 2011 and has with this club until now.

On 11 September 2020, Florenzi was loaned to PSG and the club has won the Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions in the recent 2020-21 season. Florenzi also received the Pallone d’Argento award in the 2015-16 season for his fair and promising performance during the season.

Toloi is a center-back defender and also team captain of the Serie A club Atalanta. He has also joined the Italy national team on 17 February 2021. During his club career, Toloi mostly played in the Serie A and Serie B competitions, among four clubs Goias from 2009-2012, Sao Paulo in the next three years, on loan in Roma, and Atalanta from 2015 to the present.

Accordingly, Goiás won the Campeonato Goiano two times, in the 2009 and 2012 seasons, and Sao Paulo won the Copa Sudamericana in 2012 during the time of Rafeal Toloi. Before playing for the Italy national team, Toloi participated in his native country's U-20 squad and they won the South American Championship with the second place in the World Cup 2009.

Spinazzola is an Italian footballer who is playing for the Serie A club Roma and the Italy national team as a full back. He started his football career at the age of six in the youth side of Virtus Foligno from 1999 to 2007. In the period from 2012 to 2019, he played as a loaned player for many clubs, including Empoli, Lanciano, Siena, Atalanta, Vicenza, and Perugia besides two major clubs that he has signed contracts with, which were Juventus and Roma. 

Spinazzola played for U19 and U20 of the Italy squad in the season of 2011 and 2012, and then officially made his first debut for the international career in the Italy national team. The first match was a success against the Netherlands by 2-1. His total appearances within eight Italian clubs were 228 matches, and he scored seven goals with most of them (four) being in Roma. Spinazzola received the Torneo di Viareggio Best Player award in the 2012 season.

Emerson Palmieri dos Santos (full name), also simply called Emerson, is a Brazilian Italian footballer, but he is playing in the top-notch English club Chelsea and the Italy national team. He got Italian citizenship in 2017 after playing one season in his native country’s U17 squad and won the South American U-17 Championship in 2011.

With 10 years spent in four clubs in Brazil, Italy, and England, Emerson made 159 appearances and seven scores, five of them were in Serie A and two from Premier League. The most successful period of time would be the time with Chelsea. They have won numerous major leagues and cups in England and Europe. During his time, Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021, UEFA Europa League in the 2018-19 season, became the runner-up of the FA Cup in two consecutive seasons 2019-20 and 2020-21, and the runner-up of the EFL Cup in the 2018-19 season.

Nicolo Barella is an Italian professional footballer who plays for Inter Milan and the Italy national team as a midfielder. He started his youth career in Cagliari within nine seasons and then became a professional in this club for five more years. On 12 July 2019, Barella was loaned to Inter Milan in a year-long deal, and he signed a four-year contract with this top-notch club the next year.

He brought seven goals for Inter Milan in the Serie A in the two recent seasons, half of the number of goals he has achieved during his club career. With only four seasons since Barella joined the Italy national team, he made five goals in 23 times appearing on the ground. Notably, in the match against Armenia in the Euro 2020 qualification, Barella scored three goals out of nine goals of the Italy national team, leading the final result 9-1 over their opponent.

Bryan Cristante is an Italian midfielder who plays for the Serie A club Roma and the Italy national team. He had a passion for football since he was a child, then reaching the age of 11, he joined an amateur club named Liventina Gorghense for three years. Cristante spent the next four years in the youth Milan, and then on 6 December 2011, he officially became professional in A.C. Milan and made a record of the youngest player playing in the Champions League.

He was loaned to Roma from Atalanta in the 2018-19 season for a fee of €5 million and in the most recent two seasons, he has played as an official under-contract player for Roma. He has made seven goals during his time in Roma so far, and a total of 24 goals in his club career in 231 matches. 

Bryan Cirstante joined the Italy national team in 2017 but he played for all the squads of the nation from U16 to U21 beforehand. In 11 appearances with the Italy national team, Cristante netted one goal in a friendly competition with Moldova on 7 October 2020. He was awarded the Torneo di Viareggio- Golden Boy in 2013.

Manuel Locatelli is an Italian footballer who is playing for the Serie A club Sassuolo and the Italy national team as a midfielder. Before playing for Sassuolo, Locatelli spent his youth career in Atalanta from 2007-2009 and Milan from 2009-2016. He officially signed the first professional four-year contract for his senior career with Milan.  

In the summer of 2018, Locatelli was loaned to a lower-ranking club, Sassuolo and during this season, he made 31 appearances with this club and scored three goals. In the next year, he was under-contract with Sassuolo and has played for them until now.

He recorded a total of nine goals during his club career, including seven goals for Sassuolo and two for Milan, all in the Serie A competition. In 10 matches with the Italy national team since 2020, Locatelli had one goal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification against Bulgaria, helping Italy to go further in the World Cup held next year.

Lorenzo Pellegrini is an Italian professional midfielder who plays for Roma as a captain and the Italy national team. He was a product of Roma academy for ten years and became a professional in 2014. Pellegrini joined Sassuolo the next year but only stayed until 2017, then he decided to return to Roma in July 2017.

With only two seasons playing for Sassuolo, Pellegrini made 11 goals and 20 goals in the next four seasons after the return to Roma. He started his national career with the U19 squad, and then U20 and U21 before joining the Italy national team. He made one score in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification in the match against Armenia, and one score in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League A against the Netherlands.

Stefano Sensi is an Italian footballer who has played as a midfielder for Serie A club Inter Milan since 2020 and the Italy national team since 2018. He started playing football when he was only six, for the youth side of a local club Urbania, where his older brother was playing for too. After that, Sensi joined two more academy clubs before starting his senior career in a total of five clubs throughout Italy.

Until now, he spent most of his time at Sassuolo, from 2016 to 2020 with 61 appearances and five goals. He was loaned to Inter Milan in the 2019-20 season and on 31 August 2020, he officially signed a four-year contract with this club, then they soonly won the Serie A this season. During his club career, he scored a total of 22 goals 201 times on the ground. He has also made eight international caps with three goals, one every year from 2019 to 2021.

Marco Verratti is an Italian footballer who is currently playing as a central midfielder for the top-flight club Paris Saint-German and the Italy national team. Despite his humble height, Verratti is well-known for his hard-working, technical, and creative style of playing. 

He started playing football in 2000 and until 2008, his senior career had just begun. He was a product of the youth side of Pescara and then played professionally in this club from 2008-2012. On 18 July 2020, Verratti made his professional debut for the Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and was really successful in the club.

His contract in PSG was kept being extended and until now, he has made 346 appearances with the club and scored nine goals. He has also been with the Italy national team for 10 years with 40 international caps and three goals. In the football career of Verratti, he has received plenty of individual awards, including the Bravo Award and Serie B Footballer of the Year in 2012. In the 2013-14 season, he received the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year, and PSG was the Ligue 1 Team of the Year that season, along with other six consecutive seasons. He was also awarded the Ligue 1 Foreign Player of the Year, and Pallone Azzurro voted by fans in 2015.

Jorginho is a professional midfielder who was born in Brazil, but he is playing for the top-notch English club Chelsea and the Italy national team. Despite being borned in Brazil, Jorginho moved to Italy in 2007 and started his football career in this country. He played at the youth Hellas Verona until 2010, and then officially played for this club from 2010 to 2014 with 96 appearances and 11 goals. 

He then played for Napoli under a four-year contract from 2014 to 2018. He made 133 appearances but only scored two goals. Jorginho started playing for Chelsea for a fee of £50 million in 2018 and he amazingly scored 17 goals, the most goals ever in his football career in a club, within 141 matches in three seasons of the Premier League.

In 2016, his national career began with the Italy national team. Until now, he has made 28 international caps with five goals included, in two seasons of the  UEFA Nations League A and UEFA Euro 2020 qualification.

Andrea Belotti is an Italian footballer who is playing as a striker and captain of the Serie A club Torino, and the Italy national team. Starting his youth football career with Grumellese for three years, he then played for AlbinoLeffe and brought the club 14 goals in just three seasons as a professional. 

Belotti also played for Palermo, which won the Serie B in the 2013-14 season, then moved to Torino for a fee of €7.5 million and stayed until now. In his time in Torino, he has made a total of 105 goals, leading him to the eighth-highest top goalscorer of all time in this club.

Belotti used to play for U19, U20, and U21 of the Italy squads before starting playing for the Italy national team in 2016. He has achieved 12 goals within 33 appearances, in friendly and qualification competitions. He was proudly received many personal awards, including Pallone d’Argento, Giuseppe Prisco Award, and Gazzetta Sports Awards Performance of the Year in 2017, and the Premio Nazionale Carriera Esemplare “Gaetano Scirea” in 2020.

As a son of a former footballer, Federico started playing football when he was a little boy. He is now playing as a winger for two Serie A clubs, Fiorentina and on loan to Juventus, and the Italy national team. He initially played for Settignanese from 2002 to 2007, then moved to Fiorentina and played in their youth side for nine years. In 2016, he made a professional debut for this club and has gained 34 goals so far. 

Federico has started playing as a loaned player for Juventus in the 2020-21 season, but he has successfully scored 14 goals and together with his club won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana this season. He is a former player of the U19 to U21 Italian squad, and since 2018, he has participated in the Italy national team and made one goal in the match against Armenia in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification held on 18 November 2019.

Ciro Immobile is a professional footballer who has spent his career in many top-notch clubs in Europe. He has made a total of 228 goals in 414 appearances in several top-flight competitions in the continent, Serie A, Serie B, La Liga, and Bundesliga. 

He started playing football in 2002 at Sorrento and finished his youth career in 2009 at Juventus. Then he signed a professional four-year contract with Juventus from 2009 to 2012. During this time, Immobile was loaned to other three clubs, including Siena, Grosseto, and Pescara. He has played for his current club Lazio since 2016 with a total of 150 goals in five seasons, all from the Serie A competition. Lazio then won the Coppa Italia in the 2018-19 season, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles in 2017 and 2019.
