What is the Switzerland squad for the Euro 2021?

The Switzerland national football team, which is controlled by the Swiss Football Association is participating in the Euro 2021 with the final squad of 26 men. They made the first debut in this prestigious competition in 1996 and fifth place has been their highest standing so far. So what will happen in this season of Euro with Switzerland?

Vladimir Petkovic is currently the manager of the Switzerland national team. He is a former professional player for plenty of clubs within Europe. He started his youth career in Igman Ilidza until the age of 15. He moved to Sarajevo for the next four years. Petkovic made his first professional debut in the early 1980s, and played for many clubs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and mainly in Switzerland, for only one to two seasons each club.

He began as a football manager in 1997 and during 17 years being responsible for coaching football clubs, he has managed five Swiss clubs, one Turkish club, and one Italian club before becoming the manager of the Switzerland national team in 2014. 

As a manager, Petkovic led his clubs to 257 wins out of 498 matches, 106 tied games, and 135 games lost. Petkovic and his students from Malcantone Agno won the Liga- the fourth tier in the Swiss football league system and also led Lazio to win the Coppa Italia in the 2012-13 season.

1. Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer

Yann Sommer is a goalkeeper for the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and the Switzerland national team. He was with Basel for the longest period of time, from the youth career in 2003 to the professional side in 2014. The club won four consecutive seasons of the Swiss Super League, and one Swiss Cup in 2011-12.

He was loaned to Vaduz and Grasshopper during the time playing for Basel, and in 2014, Sommer signed a five-year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the first season with this Germain club, they reached the highest finish in the Bundesliga since 1978 (the third place), also made a record of more than 17 consecutive unbeaten league games. Sommer started his national career in 2003 and was in the squad of Switzerland U16, U17, U19, and U21 before participating in the Switzerland national team in 2012 with 61 international caps up to the present. He twice received the Credit Suisse Player of the Year in 2016 and 2018 and is in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in the 2019-20 season.

Yvon Mvogo was born in Cameroon, but he spent his football career in Switzerland. Before playing as a professional goalkeeper for Young Boys in 2011, he used to be a product of this club’s academy. In April 2017, Mvogo signed a four-year contract with RB Leipzig and has played in the Bundesliga with this club since then. 

On 25 August 2020, he was loaned to PSV on a two-year deal. Yvon Mvogo played for U17, U19, and U21 Switzerland squads from 2011 to 2017. In 2018, he officially made a professional debut for the Switzerland national team in a group-stage match against Iceland in the 2018-10 UEFA Nations League. In May 2019, he participated in the final match and his team ended up in fourth place.

Jonas Omlin is a Swiss professional goalkeeper who plays for Montpellier and the Switzerland national team. Omlin started his football career in Kriens in the 1.Liga Promotion, for two seasons and 28 appearances. After that, he moved to Luzern to play in the Swiss Super League from 2014 to 2018, but he was absent in the 2015-16 season because of the loan to Le Mont. 

On 22 June 2018, Omlin was announced to play in Basel for three years. Right in the first season with Basel, they won the Swiss Cup in the 2018-19 season. Manuel Obafemi Akanji is a Swiss professional defender who plays for the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the Switzerland national team. He started his football career at the age of nine, in the local club called Wiesendangen for three years. In 2007, he moved to FC Winterthur academy club before becoming a professional for this club in 2014. 

On 15 April 2015, Akanji signed a four-year contract with Basel, and in the first two seasons, they won the Swiss Super League title. He scored five goals in 42 appearances with Basel, and then was transferred to the current club in the winter of 2018. He made the first goal for Borussia Dortmund in the match in the 2018-19 Bundesliga, and the final result of the club was 7-0. They then won the DFL-Supercup in 2019 and the DFB-Pokal in the recent season. 

Akanji has started playing for the Switzerland national team in 2017 with 29 international caps, after being a member of Switzerland’s U20 and U21 squads.

Nico Elvedi is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a center back or right-back for the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and the Switzerland national team. He spent his youth career in FC Greifensee and Zurich from 2005 to 2013 and then became professional with the latter club in the next two seasons.

He was transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2015 for a fee of €4 million. He was the player who netted the only goal for Borussia Mönchengladbach to win FC Köln in a match in Bundesliga right in the debut match. During his time in this club so far, he has made 10 goals in 195 appearances. 

Elvedi started playing in national squads in 2012, from the U17 to U19 squad before joining the Switzerland national team in 2016. He scored one goal on 18 November 2018, in a match against the Belgium national team in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League A and the final result was 5-2 for Switzerland.

Fabian Lukas Schar is a Swiss professional defender who is playing as a center back for Newcastle United, a club which is playing in the top-flight competition Premier League, and the Switzerland national team which is in the qualification of the Euro 2021. 

At the age of eight, he joined the FC Wil 1900 in his hometown for ten years. In 2009, his senior career began, starting with the club that he spent in his youth career. His first professional debut witnessed a goal from him to surpass Yverdon-Sport in an away match in the 2010 Swiss Challenge League. After four seasons in FC Wil 1900, Schar played for Basel, 1899 Hoffenheim, and Deportivo La Coruna before signing a three-year contract with Newcastle United.

Lukas Schar has scored seven goals for Newcastle United in three seasons of the Premier League within 74 appearances and the Premier League Goal of the Month Award in February 2019. Schar has also played for the national team for almost 10 years since 2013 with a total of eight goals.

Eray Cömert is not an outstanding player in the squad of the Switzerland national team but is still a part of the team as a professional player with 15 years of playing football. Besides the national team, he is also playing for FC Basel, which he joined in 2009 in the youth side and 2016 as a professional.

His first professional debut was a win of Basel in the Swiss Super League in the 2015-16 season. They also won another title in 2018-19, when he just returned from loan clubs (In 2017 and 2018, Cömert also played as a loaned player in Lugano and Sion).

In his national career, Eray Cömert has participated in plenty of international games, being in the squad of U16, U17, U18, U19, and U21 before he officially played for the Switzerland national team in 2019. His first debut for the national team was the substitution for Manuel Akanji in the 65th minute of a qualifying match for Euro 2020 in November 2019.

Loris Benito is a Swiss professional defender who plays for the Ligue 1 club Bordeaux and the Switzerland national football team. He started his football career by joining a local club FC Aarau in 2000, at the age of eight. In 2009, he played in this club as a professional player. 

During 47 appearances with the Aarau, Benito scored two goals in four seasons. From 2012 to 2019, he played for five clubs within Switzerland and Portugal, including FC Zurich, Benfica, Benfica B, Young Boys, and Bordeaux which he is still playing as a full-back now.

Rodriguez is a Swiss footballer whose father is Spanish and mother is Chilean. He spent his senior career in different countries in Europe, including Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy. His first team in his youth career was FC Schwamendingen and then he became a product of Zurich academy. After spending eight years in the youth side of Zurich, Rodiguez made his first professional debut for this club on 21 March 2010 in the 25th round of the Swiss Super League.

After that, he played for VfL Wolfburg in six seasons, winning the DFB-Poka and DFL-Supercup in the 2014-15 season. In 2017, he was transferred to A.C. Milan for a fee of €15.00M and a €2.00M bonus. His first four goals were the only ones he made in the first season with Milan in Serie A.

On 19 August 2020, Rodriguez signed a four-year deal with Torino and has made 18 appearances so far. In his national career, he was in the U-17 squad which won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009 and also played for U18, U19, and U23 Switzerland before playing for Switzerland national team in 2011 with 80 international caps and nine goals.

Kevin Mbabu is a Swiss professional defender who is currently playing for the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg and the Switzerland national team. He started playing football in the youth side of the Servette club and was promoted for the first team at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. His only appearance in the club was to substitute for a player in a Swiss Super League match against Lausanne-Sport.

Mbabu played for Newcastle United from 2013 to 2017, but only joined three matches because, in 2015, he played as a loaned player for Rangers, and in the next season, he was loaned to Young Boys, in which he became professional from 2017-2019.

On 25 April 2019, defender Mbabu signed a four-year contract with VfL Wolfburg. He has scored three goals for this club in the 2019-20 Bundesliga. Kevin Mbabu was once awarded the Axpo Swiss League Player of the Year in 2018.

Jordan Lotomba is a young footballer who was born in Tverdon-les-Brains, Switzerland. He is playing as a defender (right-back) for the Ligue 1 club Nice and the Switzerland national team. He joined Champagne Sports when he was just a little boy, and left this youth club at the age of 10. After that, Lotomba played for a local club Yverdon-Sport before moving to Lausanne-SPort, where he was trained in the club academy and then became a professional in 2016.

His first professional debut was the match against Grasshopper Club Zurich in the 2016 Swiss Super League. His career seemed to be most successful when being in Young Boys. With three seasons in this club, they all won the Swiss Super Cup title consecutively. Lotomba, therefore, became one of the key members of the squad although he didn’t make any goal. However, on 3 August 2020, it was announced that Lotomba was transferred to Nice for a fee of €5 million. He has also participated in the Switzerland national team to join the UEFA Euro 2020.

This player with the number 5.shirt of Basel is also playing for the Switzerland national team. He made the first step in football in 2001, joining the SV Würenlos and then FC Baden. In 2008, he started his career in the Aarau reserve team and three years later, he made his first two scores in the Swiss Challenge League, leading a draw against FC St.Gallen.

In 2013, Widmer signed a contract to play in Udinese, in which he netted five goals within 131 appearances. On 12 July 2018, this defender was transferred to Basel for a fee of €5.5 million and they won the Swiss Cup in the first season having Widmer. He started his national career in 2011 by participating in U19, then the U21 squad before officially playing for the Switzerland national team in 2014. Until now, he has just scored one goal in a match against Germany in the recent season of UEFA Nations League A on 6 September 2020.

One of the youngest players in the FC Zürich and the Switzerland national team, Becir Omergic is a potential footballer for the Switzerland squad in the Euro 2020. He started playing football in Étoile Carouge FC and then Servette FC for a short period of time. He made his first professional debut for FC Zürich in a match against FC Basel on 4 May 2019. Omeragic was substituted for Alain Nef in the 80th minute. 

He joined the youth side of the national squad from the U15 to U17 squad in the period of 2016 to 2018. His first appearance for the Switzerland national team was on 7 October 2020 in a friendly match against Croatia.

Besides playing for the national team, midfielder Granit Xhaka is also playing in the same position for Arsenal. He was born in Basel and joined the youth club in his region, FC Basel. During his short senior time in this club, they won two consecutive Swiss Super League titles (2010-11, 2011-12) and a Swiss Cup in 2011-12.

He was judged as a gifted player with technical skill, so in the first year with Borussia Mönchengladbah, he was the captain of the club at the age of 22. Djibril Sow is playing as a midfielder for Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and the Switzerland national team. He was trained in three clubs in his youth career until 2015 when he made his first professional debut for Zürich II. The next two seasons, he went to Germany and played for Borussia Mönchengladbach, in which he made seven goals in the Bundesliga.

In 2017, Sow returned to Switzerland and played for Young Boys in a four-year deal. The club won the first Swiss Super League title in 32 years. On 27 June 2019, he was transferred to the current club Eintracht Frankfurt for a contract until 2024.

Sow also played for national squads from U16, U17, U19, U20, and U21 before being promoted to the senior men’s national squad in 2018. 

Djibril Sow

18. Midfielder: Edimilson Fernandes

Fernandes is a Swiss professional footballer with an impressive height of 6 ft 3 in. He is currently an attacking midfielder for Bundesliga club Mainz 05. He was a product of Sion Academy from 2007 to 2013, then he made the first professional debut for this club in a Swiss Super League match on 1 June 2013. During 48 appearances with Sion, Fernades scored a total of six goals.

He also had two seasons playing for Premier League club West Ham United, and one season as a loaned player for Serie A club Fiorentina. In 2019, Fernades started playing for Mainz 05 in the 2019-20 Bundesliga. In the recent Euro 2020 qualification, he has scored one goal in a match against the Republic of Ireland on 15 October 2019.

Christian Fassnacht has played as a midfielder for Young Boys since 2017, after being part of Tuggen in 2014, Winterthur in 2015-2016, and Thun in 2016-2017. He scored numerous goals during his club time. In 286 appearances within four clubs from 2014 to the present, Fassnacht netted 79 goals, most for the Swiss Super League.

He also started his national career by participating in the Switzerland national team in 2018. His first professional debut was a match against Belgium, but they eventually lost by 1-2.  He then kept scoring in the Euro 2020 qualification against Gibraltar and in a friendly against Liechtenstein.

This Swiss right winder is playing for the Germain club Eintracht Frankfurt and the senior national men’s squad. He used to play for numerous clubs before signing the official contract with Eintracht Frankfurt, most of them were Germain clubs. Zuber was trained in five youth clubs from 1997 to 2008, and he started his senior career on 12 July 2008 in Grasshopper in the Intertoto Cup.

During his club career, Zuber has made 49 goals in 337 times appearing in the Swiss Super League, Russian Premier League, and Bundesliga. He has started playing for the national team in 2017 with 36 international caps and a total of eight goals. Recently, he has scored one for each of the Euro 2020 qualifications and 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifications.

Despite a humble height, Xherdan Shaqiri has proved his gifted talent for football by plenty of achievements, both individual and for his clubs. He used to play for many giant clubs too, such as Bayern Munich (2012-2015), Inter Milan (2015), Stoke City (2015-2018) before joining Liverpool on 13 July 2018.

He proudly received the Swiss Golden Player Award “SFAP Golden Player” and “Best Young Player” in 2012, the UEFA European Championship Goal of the Tournament in 2016, and with the Switzerland national team being awarded the UEFA Nations League Finals Team of the Tournament in 2019. Shaquiri is promising to be a formidable player for the Switzerland national team this season of Euros.

During his club career, he made 57 goals in 227 appearances in the Swiss Super League and Bundesliga. Regarding his national career, he participated in 42 international matches and netted five goals in the qualifications of the two prestigious competitions, the Euro and World Cup. Embola was awarded the FC Basel Young Player of the Year in 2013 and Swiss Footballer of the Year in 2015.

Before playing for the current Portuguese cub Benfica as a striker, Seferovic was part of many clubs in Europe, including Italian, Swiss, and Spanish. However, this number 14. shirt player seems to belong to Benfica as he has shined brightest during his time in this club.

He has scored in half of his appearances in the Primeira Liga with Benfica in four consecutive seasons, which led him to the Primeira Liga Top scorer award in the 2018-19 season. His national career is not inferior with 21 goals in 74 international caps since 2013. Seferovic will be a strong player for the Switzerland national team this season of Euro.

Admir Mehmedi is a Swiss professional forward for the Bundesliga VfL Wolfsburg and the Switzerland national team. He was trained by Bellinzona academy club as the first football club he participated in his career, at the age of eight. Two years later, Vargas was announced to play for Augsburg for a five-year contract. 

He also participated in the Switzerland U21 squad in 2018 and made two goals in five games. The next year, Vargas was called for the senior men’s national team and has scored two goals, one in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification against Gibraltar and one in a friendly against Finland.
