How did Todd Boehly ruin Chelsea?

Despite investing heavily in the Stamford Bridge team, Todd Boehly and his associates have still failed to win the hearts of Chelsea fans.

Real Madrid easily completed a 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea over two legs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season. A 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on April 19 (Hanoi time) was enough for 'Los Blancos' to eliminate their opponents from the European competition. Coach Carlo Ancelotti's team was clearly more favored than 'The Blues' before the quarter-finals, but few expected Chelsea to play so poorly.

Just two years ago, Chelsea were Champions League winners. However, many things have happened to 'The Blues' since Kai Havertz's winning goal against Man City at Dragao Stadium in Porto. One of those things was the appearance of businessman Todd Boehly and his associates, who replaced billionaire Roman Abramovich.

At this point, it is likely that many Chelsea fans miss Abramovich very much.

The mess

Lampard's confusion

With just half an hour left in the second leg of this season's Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge, names worth a total of £250 million were on the Chelsea bench. Chelsea were already 3-0 down by the time Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, and Mykhaylo Mudryk came on. In the first 60 minutes of the match, 'The Blues' played with five defenders and three defensive midfielders as they needed to score at least two goals against Real Madrid to keep their hopes alive.

Frank Lampard's strange and somewhat panicked adjustments were indicative of the mess that Chelsea had gone through this season. They no longer resembled the powerhouse of European football. Although Real Madrid did not play exceptionally well, they still managed to finish off their opponents when they had the advantage from the first leg.

From European champion to a mediocre team

In just two seasons, Chelsea went from being a European champion team to a mediocre team on the field. The problem isn't the quality of the squad, as Chelsea's current squad is even more valuable on paper than the team that beat Man City in the Champions League final two years ago. With players like Sterling, Felix, Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, and Marc Cucurella, the total cost of the squad is over 450 million pounds, which in theory should completely transform Chelsea.

However, they have only changed for the worse.

Chelsea went from being a European champion team to a mediocre team on the field

The problem with Chelsea is that people only see 11 individual names on the pitch. Just a few days ago, at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea let Brighton completely dominate them in Round 31 of the Premier League. They deserved to lose against an underrated opponent. Gary Neville commented that this was the first time in many years that Chelsea let such a weak opponent dominate them at home. Chelsea's season is almost over, and what Lampard is currently promising is probably just a place in the Europa Conference League, which is the third tier of European football.

A bleak future is waiting

Chelsea's future looks grim after a season of unfulfilled promises by Todd Boehly and his associates. The American businessman now realizes that managing a top European football team is vastly different from American sports. While Boehly can take pride in successfully managing sports teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball), Los Angeles Sparks, and Los Angeles Lakers (basketball), Chelsea and the European football model present unique challenges that he underestimated.

From firing Tuchel to signing Graham Potter and now rehiring Lampard, Boehly's decisions have failed. "The Blues" endured a disastrous 2022/23 season, and their prospects for the future are even bleaker. Losing their spot in the Champions League next season will result in a revenue drop of £50-60m, and their declining position will make it difficult to attract top talent to the club.

A bleak future is waiting for Chelsea

Furthermore, Chelsea's financial situation may become a headache due to overspending on rookie players. Apart from Enzo, Mudryk, and Marc Cucurella, all other signings have failed to meet expectations, and there is a high risk of them becoming a liability for the club's history. Felix is also likely to return to Atletico Madrid at the end of the current season. To return to the Premier League race, Chelsea will need to replenish their squad.

It remains to be seen if Boehly will learn from his first foray into managing a football club in Europe. The future of Chelsea depends on his next decisions.
