Mason Greenwood's Dream Debut in La Liga, Key Contributor to Getafe's Victory

Mason Greenwood made his debut appearance for Getafe in the 77th minute of their match against Osasuna in La Liga, which was also his La Liga debut. This match marked the official return of the 21-year-old forward to competitive play since January 2022.

Getafe secured a thrilling 3-2 victory, with Greenwood putting in a determined performance, although he did not score.

During his time on the pitch, which was a little over 20 minutes, including injury time, the 21-year-old forward had 12 touches, attempted 1 shot, and completed 4 passes with a 100% success rate. Notably, he also won a corner kick that led to the decisive goal in the 86th minute, scored by Maksimovic.

On his debut, Getafe's Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with a capacity of 16,500, was only half full. According to journalist Guillermo Rai (The Athletic), despite the enthusiastic support from Getafe fans, the English forward faced intense jeers from Osasuna fans whenever he touched the ball.

Prior to this, Getafe had received mixed reactions in Spain due to their decision to sign Greenwood, who had previously been involved in a controversy related to an altercation with his ex-girlfriend.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United at the end of the summer transfer window in 2023. Getafe did not pay a loan fee for the 21-year-old forward, and in fact, the majority of Greenwood's weekly wages of £75,000 were covered by Manchester United.

Following the signing, Greenwood's arrival created unprecedented excitement at Getafe. His debut event attracted more than 5,000 fans in attendance. Moreover, according to various sources in Spain, Greenwood's number 12 jersey became the best-selling shirt in Getafe's history in the first 48 hours after it went on sale.

Journalist Guillermo Rai revealed that Getafe's coaching staff held Greenwood in high regard, despite his two-year absence from competitive play, and they even believed that the English forward "could be the best player the club has ever had in its history."

Additionally, the La Liga club hopes that the Greenwood deal can help them build a good relationship with Manchester United and expand their reputation internationally.
