Possible Ban Looms: Cameroon's International Tournament Participation at Risk over 'Age Cheating' Allegations

Following allegations of age fraud involving Doualla, Cameroon's future participation in international football tournaments is at risk. The Cameroonian Federation, FECAFOOT, has taken swift action by suspending 62 players, including Doualla, who was the youngest member of the squad during the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Doualla, a 17-year-old midfielder from Victoria United, was a surprising inclusion in Rigobert Song's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Ivory Coast. However, FECAFOOT has accused Doualla of misrepresenting his age, resulting in his disqualification from the Elite League's play-off games. The true age of Doualla remains undisclosed, further adding to the controversy surrounding the matter.

In response to the allegations of double identities involving Doualla and his teammate Nji Richmond, Victoria United has strongly refuted the claims. The club issued a statement stating that they believe it to be an error from FECAFOOT and called on their supporters to remain calm. They further mentioned that they have submitted the required documents to prove that the players do not possess a double identity.

Cameroon's recent involvement in the age-related controversy is not an isolated incident. This marks the third consecutive year in which the nation has been embroiled in such issues. The regulations outlined by the Nations Cup impose strict consequences for violations of age fraud. If fraud or forgery is proven, the national association implicated faces a suspension, preventing them from participating in the subsequent two editions of the AFCON. In cases where the violation is due to an administrative error, the suspension will be applicable for just one edition of the tournament.

The recent revelations have emerged following an investigation by French newspaper Le Monde, which uncovered the irregularities ahead of the 2023 Nations Cup. Despite inquiries from Le Monde, FECAFOOT has chosen not to comment on the matter, further raising suspicions regarding the federation's handling of the situation.
