Motivation from Lionel Messi

In an effort to get back to winning this year, Emma Raducanu has admitted that the World Cup exploits of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have served as inspiration. After injuring her ankle in a pre-Australian Open warm-up, the former US Open champion said yesterday that she is healthy enough to compete in the year's first Grand Slam. She cited Messi's quest for the World Cup trophy as her motivation.

The world-traveling The British No. 1 finished 2022 by traveling to Qatar to attend the World Cup championship match with Novak Djokovic. And the Spurs supporter finally witnessed a good game, learning a valuable lesson about how to perform under duress.

Emma Raducanu attended World Cup final

"To watch Messi and Mbappe go head to head was really cool," she said. "What Mbappe was able to do in that final was amazing. I'm really happy for Messi because he just finished it off perfectly. It was just so good to see how they kind of handled the stage and the moment. I think you can learn how they dealt with it, how they just kept going, how they were taking penalties under pressure. It was pretty amazing to watch.”

The only tennis VIP there was Raducanu, who flew in after competing in an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi. Djokovic was the other participant. Meeting him was extremely wonderful, she noted. He talked to me for a while, largely about tennis.

Emma Raducanu’s difficult things and the story about changing coaches

Raducanu has only had new experiences since winning the US Open in 2021.Covid had limited time to prepare for her first Grand Slam as a Major champion last year, and she was plagued by blisters before losing in the second round. When she injured her left ankle in Auckland this time, she feared she might miss Melbourne and sobbed her way off the court.

However, an intensive rehabilitation program with her physio Will Herbert has prepared her for tomorrow's (Monday) match against world No. 74 Tamara Korpatsch. The winner will most likely face American adolescent Coco Gauff in the second round.

"You’re obviously a bit worried about the injury at the time,” said the world No.75 tennis player. "But we've been working very hard. It's been a team effort to get me to this place. But I think that I've not really played much tennis ever in my career so I'm kind of used to it. And I'm not stressed about the lack of tennis that much."

Raducanu is now working with Sebastian Sachs (left) who is her fifth coach in 18 months

As her fifth coach in the last 18 months, she has since hired German Sebastian Sachs. "I really like Seb," Raducanu said. "I just love the way that we're working together, and I really hope it lasts."

She is no longer a teenager after turning 20 in November, which is another upheaval since a wrist injury stopped the previous season early.

She also shared about her family:

"I think my parents still see me as a kid, so that's never going to change." You think in your head, "It's old," but then you actually realize, "I've got like 15 years of this if I want it," so I've still got a long time. It's just important to put that in perspective and not think you're running out of time at age 20. Success this year for me would probably be consistency over a long period of time, being healthy, and playing throughout the year. Another goal is that I also really want to win a title."
