Leicester City’s economical transfer plan with a limited budget

The winter transfer window opened. While many clubs received criticism for spending too much money to sign their transfer targets, Leicester seemed to have an effective transfer plan.

Buying Nicolás González

Nicolás González hasn't quite lived up to his promise at Fiorentina, and according to Sky Sport Italia, the club is willing to transfer him to Leicester City for £30 million. The 24-year-old has the versatility to play in a number of offensive positions, notably on the left flank but also on the right or as a center-forward.

He was initially selected for Argentina's World Cup team in 2022, but due to an injury, he withdrew during the team's training camp in Qatar.

Nicolás González

Gonzalez had a successful debut season at the Stadio Artemio Franchi after being acquired from VfB Stuttgart for €24.5 million in the summer of 2021. In 39 matches between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, Gonzalez scored eight goals and contributed nine assists. He has played 11 competitive games this season while battling ailments, scoring five goals. The Viola were rumored to be willing to sell him for the appropriate price, and now Sky Sport Italia analyst Gianluca Di Marzio believes they are seriously considering the £30 million (about €34 million) offer from Leicester City.

Luka Jovic and Arthur Cabral are already on the roster for Fiorentina; therefore, they are searching for alternative offensive possibilities.

Offloading Ayoze Perez

Before Ayoze Perez's contract expires in January, Leicester City is prepared to sell him. Given that the 29-year-old's contract only has six months left, questions have been raised about his future at the club. It has generated rumors that he might be moving in January rather than being lost for nothing in the summer to Leicester City.

It currently looks like a deal for the Spaniard between the Foxes and Real Betis is "in discussion." Earlier this month, AS Roma under Jose Mourinho were also said to be interested in the midfielder, but it appears that the La Liga team has gotten the jump on them.

Ayoze Perez

In 2014, Perez moved to the Premier League after moving from Tenerife to Newcastle United for about €3 million. In his final season at St. James' Park, he scored 12 goals, which convinced City to pay £30 million to acquire him in 2019.

Although Perez provided eight goals and four assists in the league in his first season in Leicester, he has never truly convinced with his performances. He has gradually fallen out of favor under manager Brendan Rodgers, making just three league starts this season.

Perez had earlier declared, prior to joining City, that it would be "wonderful for my career to go back to your homeland and play for a big team and enjoy La Liga."

Effective spending plan with limited budget

Brendan Rodgers asserted that it is unreasonable to expect him to make miraculous acquisitions while the club's rivals, Leicester City, spend far more on transfers.

Leicester City's manager outlined the statistics that, in his opinion, demonstrate that his team is outperforming its peers ahead of the Carabao Cup quarterfinal. To demonstrate how well he and his players had performed over the previous few years, Rodgers compared the spending of his team with that of Aston Villa, West Ham, and Newcastle.

Brendan Rodgers

In fact, since Rodgers took over, City has spent about £10 million on net transfers, thanks in large part to the high-priced sales of Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell, and Wesley Fofana. For instance, Newcastle has spent more over £300 million overall throughout that time, including £200 million since their takeover in late 2021.

"I don’t think there’s any doubt (that Newcastle will join the elite)," he said. "But those teams can’t be embarrassed to say that either. It’s one of the ways to move forward in the game. If you look at Newcastle’s net spending in the last year, along with the fantastic coaching of Eddie and his staff and the infrastructure from where they were to where they are now, they’re looking to build and create something. They’ll do it wisely and sensibly, but they have the resources to do that.

If you look at our net spending since I’ve been here, it’s about £10 million in the three and a half years I’ve been here. Compare that to our competitors, like Aston Villa, West Ham, Newcastle, it’s over £250m. It’s a big difference. I think I’m a decent coach, but I’m not a magician."

He thinks the statistics highlight how well his club has performed in winning the FA Cup and competing for a Champions League spot in just two seasons. He claims that, despite this, he continues to look for ways to keep up. Rodgers also claims that life is getting harder for his team because very little money is spent on the roster, and he claims he is unable to do miracles.

"I think the players here have been exceptional. Two fifth-place finishes and an eighth-place finish, for that level of spending, it’s remarkable what the players have done. We’ll continue to fight against that level of competition. If won’t stop us wanting to be the best we can be with the resources we have."
