Liverpool priorities Firmino contract extension

As Jurgen Klopp outlines his objectives for the summer, Liverpool is already making some painful personnel selections. The Reds had spent big in January.

As Jurgen Klopp plans a summer Anfield reconstruction, a new deal for Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino is allegedly Liverpool's top priority. The Reds have experienced a severe decline in fortune this season and are currently engaged in a fierce competition to qualify for the Champions League for the upcoming campaign. In an effort to get back on track, Liverpool signed PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo for £37 million during the January transfer window.

The requests for further funding have not subsided despite Klopp's suggestion that a big reconstruction might wait until the summer. The scenario is a little bit different. He said “I understand how complicated the issue is. You may believe, in your mind, that's it now for him," if you have a good player who has done a lot of wonderful things in the past. So if you can find another player to replace him and say, come on, it was a nice time, see you later, it makes sense from both sides. The dilemma is that if you can't let someone in, you can't let them out either.”

The Kops want to extend Firmino's contract

But again, it's something for the future, like the future in the summer, not right now, the German continued. Therefore, we are unable to consider it at this time. We need to play better football right now, but I have some room and time to think about it. We cannot play while claiming that we won't have these issues the following season.

The first phase of any renovation appears to have already been decided upon by the Reds, who gave Firmino's contract top priority. The striker's current contract will expire at the conclusion of the current campaign. He joined the team in the summer of 2015 from Hoffenheim, a major German club. He is already qualified to start talks with any foreign club about a free transfer after the season. It looks that the Reds want to keep him at Anfield, though. A contract extension through 2025 is anticipated, according to Sky Sports in Germany, and clubs from Saudi Arabia are circling about a potential deal. In his career with the Reds, Firmino has made 348 appearances and scored 107 goals, nine of which have come this season.
