For Bayern Munich, the winter transfer window is often quiet. Rarely do they sign athletes. The Bavarian team seldom ever makes player signings in January, much less pull off unexpected agreements. The current window, however, is distinct because Rekordmeister is actively looking for deals to strengthen the team for the remainder of the season.

Daley Blind's medical at Sabner Strasse on Thursday marked Bayern's surprising entry into the winter transfer market.

The official page of Bayern Munich announced:

"Bayern Munich have signed defender Daley Blind on a deal till the end of the season. The 32-year-old Netherlands international came through the youth system at Ajax, which was also his most recent club. He also played for Manchester United between 2014 and 2018."

Blind, 32, ended his contract with Dutch powerhouse Ajax by mutual consent in December, six months before it was set to expire, and became a free agent.

Blind expressed his excitement at joining the German champions.

"I can hardly wait to play here. We've got the most important part of the season coming up, where it’s about titles—and a club like Bayern can win every trophy. The hunger for titles here at the club was key in my decision. I hope I can bring my experience to help the team."

Blind has received 99 caps for the Netherlands and has participated in all five of the team's games during the World Cup in Qatar. Blind scored in the Netherlands' Round of 16 win over the United States. Blind, who progressed through the Ajax youth system before playing 333 games with the senior team, has won the Dutch Cup twice and the Eredivisie seven times. Additionally, he spent four years at Manchester United, where he won the League Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League.

Versatility and cover in several positions

In the previous six seasons, Blind has played for Ajax with a high level of consistency. At Manchester United, he also performed admirably in the left and center defensive positions. Although the Dutch international defender isn't the fastest in Europe, he has some of the best positional awareness. Throughout his career, he has kept a number of physically strong and quick forwards while lining up in center defense.

Due to the former Ajax defender's versatility, Bayern will have coverage in a variety of positions. Daley Blind will be a good left-sided defender to cover the vacuum left by the French defender, Lucas Hernandez, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a ligament injury. The left-back position can possibly be filled by the Dutch international in place of Alphonso Davies.

Experience

Blind not only increases the squad's versatility but also its experience. As young center backs, Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano will undoubtedly improve as a result of playing with Blind.

The Dutch defender is also a multiple champion because he was crucial to Ajax's success during the previous five seasons. Bayern may undoubtedly see more benefits than drawbacks from bringing in a veteran champion. The Bavarian club wants to bring the Champions League back to Allianz Arena after a two-year absence, so bringing in additional talent and experience in January will undoubtedly benefit the team.

Tactical flexibility for Julian Nagelsmann

Blind’s arrival at Bayern will also give tactical flexibility to Julian Nagelsmann during the second half of the season. The Dutch defender can play in a back three, so Nagelsmann can implement 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 during the Ruckrunde. Daley Blind is often acknowledged as a tactically smart player. With the presence of Blind in the squad, Nagelsmann can use different systems that will help Die Roten go deep in all competitions.

It is a win-win deal for Bayern. They are not committing huge amounts of money since Blind is unlikely to be on hefty wages. A six-month deal will make sure that it is a short-term commitment to fill the temporary voids in the squad. Moreover, Blind will bring a lot of positive qualities on and off the pitch during the next six months.
