Match summary

This is Man Utd's first match after the 2022 World Cup. Rashford was the only English player to play right from the start. Luke Shaw, another English player, was brought in in the second half. Meanwhile, captain Harry Maguire didn’t play any minutes. Instead, coach Erik ten Hag let Casemiro play as a central defender along with Victor Lindelof.

Bruno Fernandes also started from the beginning despite having played with the Portuguese team in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals. Casemiro's two teammates in Brazil, Antony and Fred, came on in the second half.

The first clear opportunity belonged to Man Utd. In the 8th minute, club young talent Alejandro Garnacho had a chance to face Bailey Peacock-Farrell but failed to beat Burnley’s goalkeeper. In a somewhat gloomy game, the turning point occurred on Fernandes' pass in the 27th minute. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been absent for a long time in the Man Utd squad, leaned forward to make a cross, letting Christian Eriksen cushion the goal to open the scoring.

Both teams had clear opportunities to score in the remaining time of the first half, but the excellence of the two goalkeepers denied all of these chances. Peacock-Farrell's reflex helped Burnley avoid conceding a goal from Anthony Martial's foot in the box in the 40th minute, while Martin Dubravka also made an impressive save from Manuel Benson's shot in the 36th minute.

Man Utd had the opportunity to double the lead after the break, but Scott McTominay’s shot missed the target even though the Scottish player was in a favorable position. The 26-year-old midfielder also made the home fans howl when he passed Benson's foot in front of the home team's penalty area. But McTominay partly redeemed himself when his ball recovery in the 57th minute opened space for Rashford to speed up on the right wing, before defeating Peacock-Farrell with a finish to the far corner.

After Rashford's goal, MU slowed down and successfully preserved the score until the final whistle.
