The origin of the CAF Confederation Cup
This competition was established 17 years ago, in 2004. Initially, in the founding year, the CAF Confederation Cup was known as the result of the combination of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
How does the cup work?
Like how it was made, the format of the CAF Confederation Cup is also a combination of different competing systems. It doesn’t follow a specific format throughout the whole competition from the beginning to the end.
Teams that qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup are chosen based on their performances in their national leagues and cup tournaments. The competition is then divided into two stages as below:
This stage of the CAF Confederation Cup includes the Preliminary, First Round, and Playoff. These rounds are played over the knock-out format. Each team plays with the other twice, one home and away basis. The Away goal rule will be applied when they end up equal. That means teams that scored more goals on the away venue will advance to the next round.
16 teams that are eliminated from the 16 finals of the CAF Champions League will qualify for the additional playoff in the CAF Confederation Cup.
In this stage, 16 teams are split into four groups of four. In each group, one team meets the other three teams twice, so they join six matches in total. The 3-1-0 system is applied, in which winning teams receive three points, losing teams obtain zero points, and both teams get one point for a tied match.
The top and second teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and finals, which are held over two-legged ties and knock-out format. Again, the Away goals rule will be used to break the tie if necessary. If the number of away goals is also equal, teams will play penalty shots to determine the winner.
The champion of the CAF Confederation Cup will meet the triumph of the CAF Champions League in the following year of the CAF Super Cup at the CAF Champions League champion’s stadium.
