Copa Libertadores- the pride of South America

Besides the most prestigious international football competitions, South Americans enjoy the local and continental tournaments either. The Copa Libertadores is what people here are proud of, so let’s see what is this tournament about in this article and grab some useful Copa Libertadores Predictions from our website.

What is Copa Libertadores?

Copa Libertadores is the highest football competition in South America. Since it is organized by CONMEBOL, which is the name of the South American football confederation, this tournament is also known as the CONMEBOL Libertadores. It was founded in 1960 and named after the leaders of the South American wars of independence.

Copa Libertadores’s format

Throughout its lifetime, the Copa Libertadores has had numerous formats in each stage. The number of teams and how teams qualify for the competition have varied over time. For example, at first, only the winners of the South American leagues could join the competition until 1966. After that, runners-up from those championships took part in either. From 2000 to 2016, Mexican teams started to appear in the tournament.

The current structure features totally 47 football teams from South American countries, competing with each other through three stages: the first stage, second stage, and knockout stage. The main format throughout each phase is round-robin knockout. Teams will meet twice at home and away games, and the loser will be eliminated. In case of a draw, a third match will be held on neutral ground. If the tie isn’t broken, a series of penalty shots will take place until it is possible to determine the winner.

Prize money and trophy

Not only the players but also football fans give attention to the prize money and trophy of the CONMEBOL Libertadores competition. Let’s figure it out in this section.

Prize money

So the money that each football club can receive in the competition is from the television rights and the advertising programs in the stadium. Every team that enters the first stage can be awarded the prize money, which increases after every round. The detailed money prizes for each phase are as below:

  • Expel at the first stage: US$350,000
  • Expel at the second stage: US$500,000
  • Expel at the third stage: US$550,000
  • Expel at the group stage: US$3,000,000
  • Expel at the round of 16: US$1,050,000
  • Expel at quarter-finals: US$1,200,000
  • Expel at semi-finals: US$1,750,000
  • Runners-up: US$6,000,000
  • Champions: US$12,000,000

Besides the team prize money, the breathtaking players can also earn some money awards for their outstanding performances in the competition. For example, the top goal scorer, the best player overall, and the fair player can receive $50,000.

Trophy

Regarding the Copa Libertadores trophy, only the winner of the tournament can get it. The trophy is called with the namesake of the competition and was designed by goldsmith Alberto de Gasperi. He was a Peruvian immigrant who was born in Italy.

The club that wins the tournament three times in a row can keep the trophy permanently. Since the inception of the Copa Libertadores, only two teams (Estudiantes and Independiente) have won three consecutive years and had the right to keep the trophy forever. That means the recent trophy of this football competition is the third version.

Who has won Copa Libertadores the most?

A football club from Argentina called Atlético Independiente is the most successful team in the history of Copa Libertadores with seven times lifting the trophy. All of their triumphs were in the 20th century, around the first season of the competition: 1964, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1984.

Another team from this South American country (Boca Juniors) is standing in second place with six times winning the championship. You can look at the graph below to see the detailed records of several teams in the Copa Libertadores, who have won the title at least twice.
