HISTORY OF THE JAPAN J3 LEAGUE
Amateur Era (1992-2013)
The precursor of the J3 was the Japan Football League. This was initially established along with its professionalization in 1992 and kicked off with two tiers below the professional J.League. After some teams were lost for various reasons (some were promoted to the J League, the others were folded), the league became the second division status in 1994 and continued with the single second-tier division.
In 1999, the new dully professional J2 was introduced so the old JFL was dissolved. However, a new JFL was formed as a nationwide top-tier amateur league. This status quickly became semi-professional, serving as a cradle of the future J League members.
The establishment of the Professional J3 (2013- present)
After the discussion on the J1-J2 Joint Committee on 16 January 2013, all J-League teams agreed to establish a new J3 league starting in 2014, and the JFL became the fourth tier as well. The decision formally became effective in a 26 February executive meeting by J.league Council. The inaugural season was defined with 12 teams.
To join the league, a team must have held an associate membership or submitted an application before 30 June 2013. Then, they have to pass an inspection to obtain a participation license issued by J.League Council.
2021 J3 LEAGUE
How is the current format of the J3 League?
Each team of the league plays in a two-legged series for a total of 28 matches. A club must have at least 3 players holding professional contracts. From the 2016 edition, 5 foreign players and a player from J League’s ASEAN partner country or from other AFC countries are allowed per team.
The matchday roster will include 18 players, and up to 3 substitutes will be allowed in the game.
About the promotion and relegation system, the J3 best teams are eligible for the J2, and a club must hold or be granted a J2 license and finish in the top 2 of the league. Since 2017, the winners and runners-up have been promoted directly and replaced by the 21st and 22nd-ranked J2 clubs. Whereas the bottom club of the J2 is relegated. If both top 2 teams are ineligible for promotion, no teams will be promoted to or relegated from the J2.
Which teams are playing in the 2021 J3?
There were no relegations from J2 League 2020 so the number of teams decreased for 2021. There are 15 teams playing in the 2021 J3.
