How is the formation of the Welsh Premier League?
The league was founded in October 1991 by Alun Evans, General Secretary of the Football Association of Wales (FAW). It was reformed in the 1992-93 season. At that time, Wales had not previously organized a national league except for the Welsh Cup, despite the FAW was a FIFA and UEFA member. The best teams in Wales have traditionally participated in English competitions, while many other Welsh clubs have competed in the Northern Premier League and Southern Football League.
The league's results were not included in the Press Association's service for the first four seasons and hence did not appear on the BBC's Final Score or Sky's Soccer Saturday.
How is the current format of the Cymru Premier?
There are 12 teams from both professional and semi-professional status clubs taking part in the current league. A season is divided into two halves and ended in a Playoff to choose Wales' fourth European team for the next season.
The 1st half runs from matchday 1 in August through to matchday 22 in January. Each club plays the other sides in the league in a two-legged format, making a total of 22 games.
After its conclusion, the top six teams will play in the Championship Conference, and the bottom six teams will play in the Playoff Conference. All points earned by teams in Half 1 are carried over to Half 2.
The 2nd half runs from matchday 23 in February through to matchday 32 at the end of April. Each side plays against the other five teams in their conference twice more to bring up a total of 32 games played.
The top-ranked club of the Championship Conference becomes the League Champion and qualifies for the UEFA Champions League. The runner-up joins the Europa League while the remaining teams qualify for the end of season European playoffs.
The bottom two teams of the Playoff Conference are automatically relegated. The best team of this conference advances to the European Playoffs.
This round includes the five teams finishing from 3rd to 7th after the two main phases. The winner will qualify for the UEFA Europa League. If one of the five teams has already qualified for Europe by winning the JD Welsh Cup, the remaining four teams will compete in the Playoffs from the Semi-Final stage onwards. If the Welsh Cup winners have already qualified for Europe through their league position or have finished in a playoff position, the remaining four teams will compete in the playoff.
