Match summary

The developments on the Education City field showed that Spain wanted to settle the match in 90 minutes. Right after the opening whistle, with the attitude of the top team, the Spanish team quickly deployed the familiar ball control game.

In the first half, the ball possession rate of coach Enrique's squad was nearly 70%. And it seemed that the Morocco team anticipated this, so they organized the defense with a large number of players from the beginning and waited for their chances to counter attack.

La Roja's first clear chance came from Asensio in the 13th minutes. Real Madrid's players closed in quickly after Bono's risky tackle, but failed to capitalize on it. In the 26th minutes, an even clearer chance came to the 2010 World Cup winners when Gavi had a shot inside Morocco's penalty area but the ball hit the crossbar. Only 1 minute later, in an attacking arrangement on the left wing, Asensio received the ball and finished in close range, but the ball went wide of the post.

Asensio missed a clear chance in the first half.

On the side of Morocco, the mobility and aggressiveness of the wingers helped them get good opportunities. In the 11th minute, Hakimi had a free kick over the crossbar. In the 32nd minute, left-back Mazraoui challenged Unai Simon's talent with a powerful long-range shot. In the last minutes of the first half, Aguerd had a header right in front of Spain's goal after Boufal's cross but the ball went over the bar.

In the second half, the two teams still maintained the same formation and tactics as they did in the first half. Opportunities still appeared, but no team successfully took advantage to open the scoring.

In this half, Spain increased pressure on Morocco with a series of attacks. However, Spain's strikers were unable to get the ball into Bona's net once, even though coach Enrique renewed his attacking line when he brought Morata and Nico Williams on.

Morocco still showed the same stubborn face as in the first 45 minutes on the back line. But in attack, their strikers still showed ungainly in the final finishing situations.

After 90 minutes of inconclusiveness, the two teams entered 30 minutes of extra time, but the situation was still equal. The first goal of the match still did not come and the score 0-0 was left unchanged after 120 minutes, meaning the fate of both teams will be decided in the penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Moroccan goalkeeper, Bono, became the hero of his country when he successfully blocked Spain's two shots, taken by Soler and Bustquest respectively. Sarabia's first shot sent the ball over the post. As for Morocco, they succeeded in 3 out of 4 shots and won 3-0 overall in the penalty shootout to win tickets to the quarterfinals.

The Moroccan keeper, Bono, was a hero for helping his nation progress.
