RFEF President Luis Rubiales has tendered his resignation amid the ongoing fallout from his post-2023 World Cup victory kiss with Jenni Hermoso.

Rubiales has confirmed his intent to step down from his role as the head of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), acknowledging that he "cannot continue" in his position due to growing demands for his resignation following the incident that occurred after Spain's 1-0 final win over England on August 20.

During an appearance on the Talk TV program "Piers Morgan Uncensored," he expressed his sentiments, saying, "I have an immense love for my daughters, and they have an equally immense love for me. I am extremely happy and proud of them; they hold a special place in my heart. As for my resignation, yes, I have decided to resign because I cannot continue in my role."

When asked about the pivotal moment that led to his decision, Rubiales explained, "I had a conversation with my daughters, and they made it clear to me that this is not just about me. They advised me, 'Luis, you must prioritize your dignity and move forward with your life. Otherwise, you may harm the people you love and the sport you hold dear.'"

Rubiales subsequently confirmed his resignation in a separate statement, reversing his initial refusal to step down from his post last month, during which he asserted that the kiss with Hermoso was "mutual" and "consensual."

The 46-year-old has formally submitted his resignation to Pedro Rocha, the RFEF's acting president, who assumed the role as Rubiales' interim replacement after FIFA suspended him for 90 days.

Rubiales has also stepped down from his position as vice president of UEFA's executive committee.

"In light of the swift suspension imposed by FIFA and the ongoing investigations against me, it is evident that I cannot resume my position," Rubiales stated in his announcement.

"Persisting in waiting and clinging to my position will not contribute positively to either the federation or Spanish football."

The announcement follows the filing of a 'sexual assault and coercion' lawsuit against Rubiales by the Spanish prosecutor, potentially subjecting him to criminal charges.

A total of 81 Spanish players, including all 23 Women's World Cup champions, pledged not to represent the national team as long as Rubiales remained in charge. Most of Jorge Vilda's coaching staff also followed suit, while the manager himself was dismissed from his role after facing criticism for applauding Rubiales during a press conference in which he adamantly refused to step down.
