History
The Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar is one of Germany's fourteen Oberligas. The league is a collaboration of the federal football federations Rhine County, Saarland, and Southwest, with the Regionalliga Südwest following it.
It is one of fourteen Oberligas of German football, and it is the fifth tier of the German league structure. It was the fourth tier of the league structure until the creation of the 3. Liga in 2008, and the third tier until the introduction of the Regionalligas in 1994. The Oberliga Südwest was one of Germany's five top divisions from January 1946 until the establishment of the Bundesliga in 1963. The current league dates back to 1978.
The top teams from the Amateurligas Rheinland, Saarland, and Südwest established it in 1978. The Oberliga was the fourth tier of the league system until 2008 when the 3. Liga was created. The team, along with the Hessenliga and the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, became a feeder league to the new Regionalliga Südwest in 2012. The previous league, the Oberliga Südwest, was set below at, and the Regionalliga West only accommodated clubs from Northrhine-Westphalia from then on.
Originally, the winner of the Oberliga Südwest was promoted automatically to the 2nd Bundesliga Süd. Following the introduction of the unified 2nd Bundesliga in 1981, the champion was required to compete in a promotion play-off. With the creation of the Regionalliga in 1994, league champions were once again promoted directly. However, since 2008, this league was demoted to the fourth tier of German football.
