The Canadian Soccer Association organizes the Canadian Championship, a club soccer tournament. The winner of the tournament earns a spot in the annual CONCACAF Champions League for Canada. Before the Canadian Premier League was founded in 2019, all fully professional Canadian soccer clubs competed in competitions located in the United States. There was no domestic competition to decide the best Canadian professional team prior to the establishment of the official competition in 2008 (Canada Soccer's Challenge Trophy only crowned the best amateur team). Though the Canadian Soccer League made a noteworthy attempt with the Open Canada Cup, which eventually attracted professional and amateur clubs from British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec. Since the establishment of the Canadian Championship in 2008, the competition was disbanded.

With the launch of the seven Canadian Premier League teams in January 2019, the 2019 Canadian Championship format was announced. The competition was extended to include three preliminary rounds, as well as semi-finals and finals, with 13 teams participating. Six teams compete in the first qualification round, with three new teams joining each round before the semi-finals, where the previous year's champion competes. Per round consists of a two-legged matchup.
