Germany Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein
History of the Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein
The Oberliga Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein was formed in 1994 as a substitute for the Oberliga Nord, which had dissolved the previous year. Along with this league, the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen was created to represent the other two of the four states formerly represented by the Oberliga Nord. The creation of the Regionalliga Nord, which became the current third tier of league football in the north and covering almost the same region as the Oberliga previously, was the reason for the disbandment of the Oberliga Nord and the formation of two independent leagues in its place.
From 1994 to 2004, the Oberliga Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein was the fourth tier of the German football league system in northern Germany. It was applicable to the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The Oberliga Nord was reformed in 2004, and the league was dissolved.
From 1995 to 1999, the champion of the Oberliga was promoted directly to the Regionalliga. Due to improvements in the league structure, no promotion was possible in 2000. From 2001 to 2004, the league champion had to compete for promotion in a play-off against the winner of the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen.
The winner of this league dominated the first three years, but it wasn't until 2004 that the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen champion gained the upper hand. When the number of Regionalligas was reduced to two in 2000, eight clubs were relegated from this league to the Oberligas, and the league increased to eighteen teams. The Regionalliga Nord now encompassed the entire northern half of Germany, rather than only the typical Oberliga Nord region.
On these grounds, it was agreed in 2004 to reform a single Oberliga Nord, allowing automatic promotion to the Regionalliga for its winner. As a result, the Oberliga Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein was dissolved. The top eight clubs were invited to the new Oberliga. The league's remaining ten clubs were relegated to the Verbandsligas.
