Overview of the South Korea K League 1
How is the Formation of the South Korea K League 1?
K League 1 is the top professional men’s association football division of the South Korean football league pyramid. The league is currently played by 12 clubs each season.
The top league was initially founded in 1983 as the “Korean Super League” with the participation of 5 member clubs. The first five teams were Hallelujah FC, Yukong Elephants, Pohang Steelworks, Daewoo Royals, and Kookmin Bank. That year, Hallelujah FC won the first-ever title in the league. In 1987, the competition was renamed the “Korean Professional Football League” with the home and away system. In 1998, it was once again known with a new name “K League”.
South Korea K League 1
After the 2011 season, the K League Championship and the Korean League Cup were abolished, and the league was split into two divisions. The "K League Classic" was given to the first division, while the "K League Challenge" was given to the newly formed second division, and both are now part of the K League framework. The K League has grown from five to 22 clubs since its inception.
The current official name "K League 1" has been used since January 22, 2018.
How does the K League 1 work?
Because the number of K League teams was reduced in 2013, only the 12th team was automatically demoted, with the 11th team playing the winner of the K League 2 promotion playoffs. Each club in the league plays the others thrice in the regular round, then the top and bottom six teams are divided into Split A and Split B to continue competing. A team plays every other team in the split once to define the final standings.
The K League season usually starts in March and lasts until late November. The number of games, clubs and systems used has changed over time.
With the exception of Sangmu FC, which has a unique status as a military side, the K League champions, runners-up, and third-placed teams advance to the AFC Champions League the following season. If the Korean FA Cup winners are unable to qualify for the AFC Champions League or have already qualified, the fourth place can also compete.
