WHAT IS THE ETHIOPIA PREMIER LEAGUE?

The Ethiopian Premier League is also known as the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League due to sponsorship reasons. This is the top Ethiopian association football division. The league is organized by the Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (formerly by the Ethiopian Football Federation from 1997 to 2020).

The first edition of the Ethiopian top league was held in 1997 (1990 E.C) as the replacement to the former First Division (est.1994). The competition has been played as an annual league since the 1997-98 season with Saint George S.C emerging as the most successful football team.

THE HISTORY OF THE ETHIOPIA PREMIER LEAGUE

Initial version

The first official version of an Ethiopian Football league was founded in 1944. There were 5 teams representing the various communities of Addis Abeba and the British Military Mission in Ethiopia contested for the title.

The early years of the top division were dominated for the most part by Mechal (Defense Force SC now). They won 6 champion titles throughout the 40s and 50s.

Premier League Era

In 1997, the first Ethiopian Premier League was officially held with the winning title belonging to Ethio Electric (EEPCO). In the following year of the league, the number of participating teams was increased to 10.

Saint George S.C have been considered the unbeatable club in the Premier League when they have got almost titles since the inaugural edition.

On 5 May 2020, the 2019-20 Ethiopian Premier League was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, no team was crowned the champion titles, and no teams were relegated from the league in this season.

HOW IS THE FORMAT OF THE ETHIOPIAN PREMIER LEAGUE?

There are 16 clubs joining the Premier League. During the course of a season which lasts from November to May, each team plays the others twice in a double round-robin system, for a total of 30 games. The achievements of teams were calculated by points with 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and no points for a loss. If there are still any ties among teams, rules of goal difference and goals scored will be used to find out the ranking of teams.

The winner of the Ethiopian Premier League automatically qualifies for the following year’s CAF Champions League. The runner-up enters the CAF Confederation Cup. On the other hand, the three lowest-ranked teams are relegated to the Ethiopian Higher League ( Second Division of Ethiopian football), and the top three from the Second Tier are promotes in their place instead.

WHICH TEAMS ARE IN THE 2020-21 ETHIOPIAN PREMIER LEAGUE?

The 2020-21 Season was kicked off on December 12, 2020, with the participation of 16 clubs in Ethiopia. This is the 74th edition as the top-level football in Ethiopia and the 22nd season as the Premier League.

The first round of the league was held at Addis Abeba and Jimma Stadiums. Whilst, the second round was held at Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, and Hawassa stadiums.
