BASIC INFORMATION OF SPAIN TERCERA
What is Spain Tercera?
Spain Tercera is known as Tercera División. This is considered the biggest football tournament for non-professional clubs in Spain, which is above Divisiones Regionales( Regional Divisions).
Taking into consideration the level of Spain's Tercera Division in the Spanish football league system, this is now the fourth tier. It's bigger leagues are the Spain Primera Liga( La Liga), the Spain Segunda División ( La Liga Smartbank) and the Segunda División B.
At the end of a Tercera Division season, the best teams will be promoted to the semi-professional Segunda División B. Whereas, some last-ranked teams will be down to the 1st Regional Division.
The Tercera Division was first held in 1929. Its name and level have been changed several times. From the 2021-22 season, the league will be renamed into the Tercera División RFEF and down-leveled to the fifth tier. The reason is due to the appearance of a new third- leveled competition in the Spanish football league system called the Primera División RFEF.
How does Spain Tercera work?
The Spain Tercera format has been changed several times through different periods. Its initial format started to be used in 2006. The league featured 360 teams which were divided into 18 geographical groups. Each group included 20 clubs.
Until the 2020-21 season, there have been 397 teams taking part in the league. It still remained 18 regional groups but each group had about 21 to 24 teams inside. Groups are managed by their regional football federations.
From the next season( 2021-22), Spain Tercera will become the Tercera Division RFEF with the participation of 18 groups of 18 clubs each.
