What is the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup?

Vietnamese National Football Super Cup, also known as the Thaco National Football Super Cup due to sponsorship reasons, is a super cup competition for the winners of the other two tournaments in the previous season, the V.League 1 and the Vietnamese National Football Cup. The Vietnam Super Cup competition has been held annually since its inception in 1998.

In the inaugural and second seasons, the cup was called Toyota Cup because, at that time, Toyota was the main sponsor for this football competition. In 2001, it was called Honda Cup besides the official name.

In the 2002 edition, the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup was again sponsored by Toyota and got its name back as Toyota Cup. Next year, it was called the VTC Cup. In the next five seasons (from 2004 to 2008), IZZI was the sponsor of the Super Cup. The competition was also sponsored by Megastar, 584 Group, PV Gas, and VPP Hồng Hà after that.

In the 2014 season, Thaco started becoming the main sponsor of the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup to the present, hence the name Thaco Cup until now.

How does the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup work?

Since the Vietnamese National Football Cup is open to all teams that compete in the V.League 1, chances are the winners of these two contests are just one club. In case one team wins both the V.League 1 title and the National Cup, they will face the runner-up of the Vietnamese National Football Cup in the Super Cup game. 

Two champions will compete in a single match to find out the winner. If the official game ends up with a tied result, they will play penalty until they can decide the triumph who has scored more penalty shots. 

In the history of the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup, there have been five seasons that witnessed the penalty phase to find out the champion of the competition. In the 2009 Super Cup (also known as Megastar Cup), Lam Sơn Thanh Hóa and SHB Đà Nẵng finished the match with a 1-1 draw, but Thanh Hóa Football Club was the winner with a 4-3 penalty result. The next year, Hà Nội F.C. and Sông Lam Nghệ An also leveled with a 2-2 result and Hà Nội eventually won the cup by scoring four penalty goals over two goals of Nghệ An.

Again, in the 2011 PV Gas Cup, Sông Lam Nghệ An has crowned the championship thanks to a 3-1 penalty win despite the draw 1-1 in the official game with Navibank Sài Gòn. In 2013, Vissai Ninh Bình surpassed Hà Nội by a close result of 5-4 penalties. In the 2016 season, after a 3-3 draw, Than Quảng Ninh was the winner by defeating Hà Nội in the penalty play-off. 

Titles by clubs

There are three clubs that have the most titles in the history of the Vietnamese National Football Super Cup. By winning the recent 2020 season of the Thaco Cup, Hà Nội F.C. has just gained the fourth title and together with Becamex Bình Dương and Sông Lam Nghệ An are the most successful clubs with four titles of the Super Cup. Followed by Hoàng Anh Gia Lai with two times winning the Super Cup in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
