Getafe's La Liga match against Alaves was temporarily suspended due to chants directed at Mason Greenwood, the Manchester United forward currently on loan at Getafe.

Greenwood, 22, has been on loan at Getafe for the entire season, as Manchester United decided last August that it was in his best interest to continue his career away from Old Trafford. In February 2023, he was cleared of charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all of which he denied.

Throughout his loan spell at the Madrid-based club, Greenwood has faced chants related to the allegations. During Saturday's match against Alaves, play was halted for two minutes shortly after Alaves took an early lead due to chants from the home section, including "Greenwood, die."

Referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez stopped the game in the 18th minute in response to the chants, and Alaves' stadium announcer urged the fans to cease their chants. The chanting decreased following the warning.

It's reported that some staff members from Getafe remained concerned about the treatment directed towards their 22-year-old loanee throughout the remainder of the game. However, the club officials have not yet disclosed whether they intend to file a formal complaint with La Liga.

Despite Greenwood's efforts, Alaves held on to secure a 1-0 victory, marking Getafe's fourth consecutive defeat. Additionally, Getafe's woes were compounded when substitute Ilaix Moriba received his marching orders in the 95th minute after receiving his second yellow card. Greenwood completed the full 90 minutes but was unable to increase his tally of eight goals and six assists in La Liga this season.

Sources indicate that the one-time-capped England international is unlikely to feature for Manchester United next season. The Premier League club is reportedly contemplating either a second loan spell or a permanent transfer. Greenwood is under contract with his childhood club until June 2025, with United holding the option to extend it for an additional 12 months.

Recent reports have linked Greenwood with a potential move to Italian giants Napoli. Additionally, several unnamed Premier League clubs have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring his services, while Getafe is keen to retain him.

Club president Angel Torres expressed his sentiments, stating, "If it were up to the player, his parents, and the club [Getafe], I believe he would continue for another year."

"But regarding Manchester [United], the news that we have from last week, where the [Getafe] sporting director went to England to see some games and was with them, is that, if a good offer comes along, they would want to sell because he is not going to go back there.

"We'll have to wait until the end of June... the people and the coach are very happy with him. I think he will remain with us for another season, or at least until January. He is a good footballer."
