Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou received a warm welcome in Melbourne, but Newcastle United spoiled the party by defeating the Londoners on penalties at the MCG.

Despite Spurs' dominance, James Maddison's goal in the 31st minute broke the deadlock before Alexander Isak equalized just before halftime. Australian talent Garang Kuol made his Newcastle debut in the 71st minute. With the score tied at 1-1 at full-time, the match went straight to penalties.

In front of a massive crowd of 78,419 fans, 19-year-old Kuol converted Newcastle's fourth penalty, securing Eddie Howe's side a 5-4 shootout victory.

Postecoglou praised his team's effort, considering the travel and their recent Premier League game. He noted that while some players would head back to Europe, others would have a few days off before international tournaments like the Euros or Copa America. As for himself, Postecoglou planned to take a short break before returning to work.

The friendly not only showcased Premier League clubs but also served as a homecoming for Melbourne's beloved son, Postecoglou. A highlights reel of his playing and coaching journey delighted the local fans at the MCG.

South Korea's Son Heung-min also drew attention, receiving thunderous applause whenever he touched the ball during his time on the field. Despite some early appeals for penalties, Spurs took the lead through Maddison's goal, aided by a mistake from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Trippier was substituted for Jacob Murphy after just 37 minutes, shortly before Son's impressive pass around the Newcastle defense in the 40th minute, which led to Brennan Johnson's shot being saved by Pope.

Newcastle leveled the score just before half-time with a counterattack. Murphy's cross forced Brandon Austin to clear the ball, but it fell straight to Isak, who capitalized on the opportunity.

Kuol, who has endured challenging loan spells at Hearts and Volendam since joining Newcastle last January, came on with 20 minutes remaining. Despite seeing little of the ball during regular time, he made his mark during the shootout.

The post-season friendly served as Spurs' final game before their break, while Newcastle will face the A-League Men All Stars at Marvel Stadium on Friday evening.
