Patrik Schick's precise strike gave Leverkusen the lead, followed by Victor Boniface's successful penalty kick to increase their advantage.

In the second half, Amine Adli extended their lead with a header from a corner, while late goals from Josip Stanisic and Alex Grimaldo sealed the victory.

With this win, Xabi Alonso's team is on the verge of achieving the first part of an invincible treble. If Leverkusen can avoid defeat in their upcoming league match against Augsburg next Saturday, they will become the first Bundesliga team to go undefeated throughout an entire season.

Previously, Bayern Munich experienced just one loss in their title-winning seasons of 1986-87 and 2012-13.

Following their last league match, the Bundesliga champions will compete against Italian side Atalanta in the Europa League final in Dublin on May 22nd, and then play in the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern in Berlin three days later.

Never-kusen to never losing

The last time Leverkusen suffered a defeat was in May 2023, when they faced Bochum and lost 3-0 at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion on the final day of the 2022-23 Bundesliga season.

However, the likelihood of a similar outcome seemed slim from the moment Bochum defender Felix Passlack was sent off in the 15th minute for a foul on Nathan Tella as he threatened to break through on goal.

With a numerical advantage, Leverkusen patiently waited for their chance while Bochum defended resolutely. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Patrik Schick stylishly scored with a first-time shot from 10 yards after receiving a superb cross from Arthur.

Just before halftime, Leverkusen was awarded a penalty when Tella was brought down by Keven Schlotterbeck. Victor Boniface calmly converted the spot-kick, sending Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann the wrong way.

In the second half, Leverkusen continued to dominate, and Amine Adli scored with a powerful header from Jonas Hofmann's corner in the 76th minute. Josip Stanisic then added a fourth goal with a shot from the corner of the box before Alex Grimaldo completed the scoring with a tap-in into an empty net during added time.

The nickname "Never-kusen" was abandoned when Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title with five games to spare. Now, with three games left in their season, "Never-losing" seems like a more fitting nickname as they stand on the verge of football immortality.
