WHAT IS SPAIN TERCERA?
Basic information of the league
The official name of Spain Tercera is Tercera División. This is now the fourth tier of the Spanish football league system. The best teams of Spain Segunda will be promoted to the semi-professional Segunda División B and some last-ranked teams will be relegated to the Regional Division (The Divisiones Regionales de Fútbol).
In 1929, Spain Tercera Division was created. It was the replacement to Segunda División B as the third tier of the league system at that time. It contained 33 clubs which were separated into 8 groups. The eight group winners qualified for a play-off round.
Until the 1977-789 season, Spain Segunda B was revived and Tercera Division was down-leveled to the fourth tier of the Spanish football league system.
From the 2021-22 season, Tercera Division will be renamed into Tercera División RFEF . It will also become the fifth level in the league system because of a new creation of the third-level professional division called Primera División RFEF.
How is the format of Spain Tercera?

Former format (2006): 360 participating teams are divided into 18 regional groups of 20.

Current format( 2020-21): 397 teams are split into 18 geographical groups. Each group contains from 21 to 24 clubs. Each group is managed by a regional football federation.

From the 2021-22 season: Tercera Division RFEF contains 18 groups of 18 teams each.
The 18 winners of 18 groups are drawn against the fourth-place clubs. Whereas, 18 runners-up are drawn against the third-place clubs within their groups. All matches are played in two-legged series.
The 36 first-round winners play single knock-out matches in each of their regions. Then, the 18 best teams are promoted to the Segunda División B, and the 18 losing teams have to play additional play-off rounds if possible to compete for the two remaining spots in Segunda Division B. The worst teams are relegated to the Regional Division.
