Bayern Munich Banned from Wearing Red Home Kit in Champions League

Bayern Munich are currently prohibited from wearing their home kit in the Champions League due to UEFA regulations, as the red design does not comply with the governing body's rules. As a result, they are required to play in their away strips instead.

Bayern Munich have been barred from wearing their home kit in the Champions League due to the color of their shirt numbers.

As they prepare to face Celtic on Wednesday, the German giants have been forced to wear their away kits at the Allianz Arena throughout the tournament. In their recent home victory over Slovan Bratislava, they donned their beige strip instead of their traditional red.

UEFA imposed the ban due to the dark numbers on Bayern’s red jersey, which reportedly do not provide enough contrast for viewers, violating the governing body’s visibility regulations. According to BILD, modifications will be required if Bayern wish to wear red in the remaining Champions League matches this season.

As a result, Bayern must rely on their black or beige kits for European fixtures. Even when they travel to Glasgow, where their red kit wouldn’t clash with Celtic’s green and white hoops, they still won’t be able to wear it.

The Bundesliga leaders have experienced mixed results in Europe this season, forcing them into the first knockout phase rather than automatic qualification for the last 16. With five wins and three losses in eight Champions League games, Bayern suffered defeats to Aston Villa, Barcelona—who put four past them—and most recently, a surprising 3-0 loss to Feyenoord.

Bayern Munich, six-time European Cup winners, last lifted the trophy in 2020 as part of a historic treble. Meanwhile, Harry Kane is still chasing the first trophy of his career, with Bayern hoping to mount a deep run in the tournament—especially with the final set to take place at their own Allianz Arena.

Raphael Guerreiro has expressed the team's confidence ahead of their clash with Celtic, stating that failure feels almost "impossible" for the German giants.

“This is the Champions League for real now, and for Bayern, we feel it’s impossible to fail," he said. "This squad believes we’ll be in the quarter-finals at the very least, but we have to take care of this phase first. Celtic have a strong squad and the same ambition—they want to win. It won’t be easy for us, but we’re prepared for these two matches.”
