Eddie Howe will miss the next two matches after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is currently recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia, the club has confirmed. In a statement, the Premier League side said: "Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia. The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery. Get well soon, gaffer."

Howe also expressed his gratitude in a personal message: "A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family. I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I'm immensely grateful for the specialist care I'm receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible."

Assistant manager Jason Tindall took charge of Newcastle's recent 2-0 victory over Manchester United and will also oversee the upcoming matches against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, along with Graeme Jones.

Speaking to Sky Sports before the Manchester United game, Tindall said: "He was taken to hospital on Friday evening, so everybody wishes him the best and I'm sure he'll be back with us again soon." He also commented on team selection: "When you've been ill all week, it's very difficult to have the kind of input that Eddie would normally have, but the way we work, we know the expectations, and we've got a fantastic group of players. They know the demands the manager and everyone else will put on them, so it's important they go out and deliver a performance Eddie will be proud of."

Newcastle secured a crucial 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, keeping their Champions League qualification hopes very much alive. Harvey Barnes netted a brace, with Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes also getting on the scoresheet.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the win, assistant manager Jason Tindall revealed that Howe had sent a message to congratulate the team’s performance. "I've just seen a message from him before I came to do the press, congratulating the performance from everybody and the team," said Tindall. "He was able to watch it, and I'm sure that will have lifted his spirits."

The win moved Newcastle up to fourth place in the Premier League, with a game in hand over the teams directly below them. That game in hand will be played against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, a fixture that was rescheduled after Newcastle's Carabao Cup final win over Manchester United.
