In association football, jersey numbers or squad numbers are utilized to differentiate players who are playing on the field. These numbers are helpful in indicating the position of each player in the starting line-up, with the players usually donning numbers 1-11. Nowadays, the significance of these numbers has diminished and they are often chosen based on the players' personal preferences and the availability of numbers. Nonetheless, numbers 1-11 remain the most commonly used on the football pitch.

To provide further clarity, it is common for defenders to wear lower numbers like two, three, and four while higher numbers like seven, nine, and 10 are typically reserved for star forwards, attacking midfielders, and playmakers. However, the number one is typically assigned to the first choice goalkeeper of a team.

History of using shirt number in football

The use of numbered jerseys in football dates back to 1911, when Australian teams Sydney Leichardt and HMS Powerful first implemented squad numbers on their shirts. The following year, numbering in football became mandatory in New South Wales. The next recorded instance occurred on March 23, 1914, when the English Wanderers, an amateur team comprising players from Football League clubs, faced off against Corinthians at Stamford Bridge in London. This was the first match played by Corinthians after their FA ban for joining the Amateur Football Association was lifted, with the Wanderers emerging victorious with a 4-2 win.

In South America, Argentina became the first country to use numbered shirts in football. This happened during a friendly match played between the Scottish team Third Lanark and a local combined team ("Zona Norte") on June 10, 1923. Both teams wore shirts numbered from 1 to 11.

On March 30, 1924, the use of squad numbers in football arrived in the United States during a match between the Fall River Marksmen and St. Louis Vesper Buick in the 1923-24 National Challenge Cup. However, only the local team wore numbered shirts during the game. The history of numbered shirts in football is a testament to the evolution of the game, and their use continues to be an important aspect of the sport to this day.
