While footballers generally enjoy the adoration of fans worldwide, there are some players who have faced widespread hatred for a variety of reasons.

These reasons can include involvement in off-field scandals, frequent diving, engaging in fights, employing dirty or rough play tactics, employing dark arts, using insulting or disrespectful language, and being embroiled in various controversies.

With that in mind, Betimate has compiled a list of the top 10 most hated soccer players of all time.

10. Pepe

Pepe has gained notoriety for his aggressive, combative, and sometimes dangerous style of play on the football field. The Portuguese defender frequently faces criticism from the media due to his penchant for picking up cards, unsportsmanlike behavior, diving, and delivering violent challenges during matches.

One particular incident that stands out was during a highly charged Clasico match in March 2014, where Pepe and Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas engaged in a heated exchange. In the heat of the moment, Pepe nudged Fabregas' forehead with his own, resulting in both players dramatically collapsing to the ground in apparent agony. Neither player emerged from the incident with their reputations intact.

However, one of the primary reasons why Pepe is widely regarded as one of the most hated footballers is his evident animosity towards Lionel Messi. Throughout his time in La Liga with Real Madrid, Pepe often received red cards for his excessively aggressive tackles on the beloved Argentine legend.

9. El-Hadji Diouf

El-Hadji Diouf is a footballer who has been consistently embroiled in controversies throughout his career. One of his most infamous actions was his disgusting habit of spitting at opponents and even fans, which resulted in numerous disciplinary issues.

In addition to his spitting incidents, Diouf has been involved in other legal and ethical problems. He was convicted of driving without a license and was implicated in a car crash. In September 2009, he was questioned by the police for allegedly using a racial slur towards a ball-boy during a match at Everton, directing offensive language at him.

Another incident occurred in January 2011, when Neil Warnock, the manager of Queens Park Rangers, accused Diouf of taunting an injured Jamie Mackie during a match, referring to Diouf as "lower than a sewer rat."

In 2012, Diouf was arrested along with five other men following reports of a nightclub brawl in Manchester, which left one person seriously injured. Diouf was subsequently released on bail for a week.

Further controversy arose in 2013, when Diouf received a controversial red card at Elland Road for making offensive gestures towards the Brighton away fans. These incidents and Diouf's repeated involvement in controversies have contributed to his reputation as one of football's most hated players.

8. Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs, known for his remarkable skills and athleticism as a soccer player, faced a severe blow to his public image when it was revealed that he had been involved in an extramarital affair with his brother's wife for a period of eight years.

The consequences of the affair were significant, leading to strained relationships within Giggs' family. Following his appointment as the manager of the Wales national team, his father Danny publicly expressed his shame towards Ryan, even refusing to mention his name.

In 2011, there were reports that Giggs had obtained a gagging order to prevent the disclosure of an alleged extramarital affair with model Imogen Thomas, although this was widely publicized.

In November 2020, Giggs faced legal trouble when he was arrested on suspicion of assault against his ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, and her younger sister, Emma.

These incidents have tarnished Giggs' previously respected and admired public persona, highlighting the personal controversies that have impacted his reputation.

7. John Terry

John Terry faced severe backlash and became widely disliked when it was revealed that he had engaged in an affair with Vanessa Perroncel, who at the time was the girlfriend of his Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge. The affair resulted in significant turmoil within the English squad, with allegations even surfacing that Terry had pressured Perroncel into having an abortion.

Despite Bridge and Perroncel reportedly ending their relationship prior to the affair, the scandalous nature of the situation had a profound impact. Manager Fabio Capello decided to strip Terry of his captaincy, and Bridge removed himself from consideration for the World Cup team, likely due to the uncomfortable dynamics that the situation created.

Terry's reputation suffered another blow when he was found guilty of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers player Anton Ferdinand in 2011. This incident further tarnished Terry's public image and exacerbated the negative perception surrounding him.

6. Stefan Effenburg

Stefan Effenberg was widely recognized for his leadership qualities, exceptional passing range, shooting ability, and physical strength. However, his career was also marked by a controversial and temperamental character that frequently attracted attention and criticism from fans, managers, and players alike.

In 2001, Effenberg faced a fine after being found guilty of assaulting a woman in a nightclub, an incident that further added to his troubled reputation.

The following year, he made controversial remarks implying that unemployed individuals in Germany were lazy and unwilling to seek employment, advocating for benefit cuts.

In addition, Effenberg released a highly contentious autobiography that garnered attention for its explicit content. The book included scathing criticisms of fellow football professionals, including his club and national team teammate, Lothar Matthaus.

5. Diego Costa

Diego Costa is widely despised for his unsporting behavior on the football field, which includes unnecessary roughness towards opponents, a confrontational attitude, and a tendency to incite trouble. These actions have led to numerous controversies throughout his career.

Known for his aggressive style of play, the Brazilian-born Spaniard has gained a reputation as one of the most aggressive soccer players in history. He frequently engages in clashes with opponents and deliberately provokes them, often crossing the line of fair play.

Diego Costa is regarded by many as one of the most notorious villains in the history of the Premier League, as his actions and behavior have consistently drawn ire from fans, players, and managers alike.

4. Ashley Young

Ashley Young has long been criticized for his diving antics, earning him the reputation as the Premier League's "King of Diving." Throughout his career, he has faced accusations of going to ground easily and exaggerating contact in order to win penalties.

Opposition managers, players, and pundits have publicly called out Young for his propensity to dive, highlighting his attempts to deceive referees and gain an unfair advantage for his team.

Notably, former managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes have reportedly spoken to Young about his diving behavior, indicating that even within his own club, there have been concerns raised about his actions.

These repeated instances of diving have made Young a polarizing figure among fans and have contributed to his negative reputation within the football community.

3. Joey Barton

Joey Barton is widely regarded as one of the dirtiest players in the history of the English Premier League. Known for his aggressive style of play, the English midfielder frequently found himself in trouble on and off the pitch, seemingly relishing in the chaos he created.

Barton gained notoriety for his penchant for making extremely rough tackles, often crossing the line of fair play and endangering opponents. Additionally, he was known for engaging in fights with both teammates and managers, as well as opposing players, further adding to his reputation for aggression and confrontational behavior.

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of Barton's controversial career is his criminal history. He is one of the few footballers who has served time in prison, further contributing to the negative perception surrounding him.

2. Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez has been at the center of several controversies throughout his career, which have drawn significant global attention and contempt.

One of the earliest incidents that garnered widespread criticism was during the 2010 FIFA World Cup when Suarez intentionally handled the ball on the goal line to prevent a certain goal for Ghana. Although he was sent off and Ghana was awarded a penalty, Suarez's actions were seen as unsportsmanlike and unethical.

During his time at Ajax, Suarez infamously bit an opponent during a match, further adding to his troubled reputation.

After moving to the English Premier League, Suarez faced numerous accusations of diving, with opponents and pundits questioning his propensity to go to ground easily in search of fouls and penalties.

One of the most significant controversies involving Suarez was his lengthy ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, a Manchester United player. Following the incident, Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand in a subsequent match between their teams, further exacerbating the tension surrounding the issue.

Suarez's biting incidents also gained significant attention and condemnation. In 2013, he bit Branislav Ivanovich during a match against Chelsea, and in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he infamously bit Giorgio Chiellini during a match between Uruguay and Italy.

1. Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos is indeed known for his aggressive and rough-tackling style of defending, often displaying a fiery temper on the pitch. He has been involved in incidents where he has kicked or elbowed opponents, leading to criticism and controversy.

Ramos has been accused of employing "dark arts" tactics, such as using his hands to impede opponents from scoring, which has further added to his contentious reputation.

His behavior and playing style have earned him a negative perception among opposition teams and fans, with many viewing him as a player who crosses the line of fair play.

However, it is worth noting that Ramos's move to Sevilla, despite interest from Saudi Arabia, has garnered some admiration from football fans, suggesting that there are those who appreciate his skills and contributions to the game.

Additionally, Ramos holds the record for receiving the most red cards in the history of La Liga, further solidifying his reputation as a player who pushes the limits of aggression on the pitch.
