Arsenal is refusing to surrender in the race for the Premier League title! Despite expectations that Manchester City would secure the title effortlessly, Mikel Arteta's team defied predictions and clinched a remarkable 2-0 victory against Newcastle.

This triumph secured Arsenal a minimum of second place in the standings and, more significantly, brought them within one point of City with only three games left to play.

Martin Odegaard once again displayed his brilliance, replicating his impressive performance against Chelsea earlier in the week. The Arsenal captain took charge by netting the opening goal in the first half with a powerful shot from outside the box that found the bottom corner. The match was filled with frantic action as both teams had their chances. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Odegaard himself squandered glorious opportunities to increase Arsenal's lead before halftime.

Arsenal had an important victory when confronting with Newcastle

Newcastle had a close call when Alexander Isak struck the post, but their hopes were dashed when Aaron Ramsdale pulled off a sensational save to deny Fabian Schar's point-blank header. This pivotal moment in the game set the stage for Schar's own-goal, which came shortly after some impressive play from Martinelli. The goal doubled Arsenal's lead and secured a victory that showcased their determination to continue fighting, refusing to surrender in the face of Manchester City's unstoppable form in the final stages of the season.

This outcome had a significant impact on the championship race. Now, let's analyze the winners and losers using Betimate's insights following the result of this match.

The winners

Aaron Ramsdale

It was truly a remarkable day for the Arsenal goalkeeper. He showcased his exceptional skills by making several outstanding saves, but the one he executed in the second half to deny Schar's close-range header was truly extraordinary and ranks among the best saves of the entire season.

Aaron Ramsdale had an excellent performance in the match between Newcastle and Arsenal

Not only did he manage to get his hand on the ball, but he also displayed tremendous strength in clawing it out. Furthermore, his commanding presence in the penalty area and his ability to handle numerous high balls were immensely impressive. The England international delivered a top-notch performance, arguably one of his finest displays this season.

Martin Odegaard

There's little left to be said about Arsenal's captain at this stage. Once again, Odegaard displayed excellence during the match against Newcastle, just as he did against Chelsea earlier in the week.

In the early stages at St James' Park, the home team dominated Arsenal, seemingly on the verge of scoring the opening goal due to their relentless pressure. Arteta's side was in desperate need of someone to step up and make a difference, and it was their captain who answered the call. With a magnificent strike from long range, he completely turned the game around and broke the deadlock.

This goal marked Odegaard's 15th of an exceptional season, equaling a record previously set by Cesc Fabregas for the most goals scored by a midfielder for Arsenal in a single Premier League season.

Granit Xhaka

The incredible block executed by Arsenal's midfielder to deny Joe Willock an equalizer in the second half was an absolute beauty. With Willock finding himself completely unmarked in the box, it seemed inevitable that he would score. However, Xhaka managed to recover and make a remarkable block, preserving the visitors' lead. It was a sensational display of skill from the midfielder.

Given the amount of space Willock had, Xhaka could have easily given up, but he persevered and reaped the rewards. It was a match-winning challenge from Xhaka, highlighting his superb performance throughout the game.

The losers

Thomas Partey

On paper, this match seemed tailor-made for Thomas Partey. Not long ago, it would have been unimaginable to consider Arsenal visiting a venue like St James' Park without Partey in the starting lineup.

However, on Sunday, Arteta opted to stick with Jorginho following the Italian midfielder's excellent display against Chelsea. Jorginho showcased his skills during the midweek triumph, leading to the expectation that Partey would be reintroduced into the team to counter the physicality of the home side at Newcastle.

Arteta chose Jorginho instead of Thomas Partey

The fact that Partey didn't feature speaks volumes about his current form, raising questions about his potential return to the starting lineup in the final three games of the season. Especially considering the impressive performance delivered by Jorginho, Arteta may have a tough decision to make regarding Partey's involvement.

Chris Kavanagh

Chris Kavanagh's performance was shockingly poor. The referee struggled to maintain control of the game from the early stages and failed to regain it throughout.

Numerous incidents were overlooked, allowing players to make reckless challenges without consequence. The astonishing part was that it took until the 71st minute for the first yellow card to be shown.

Chris Kavanagh - the main referee in the match Newcastle vs Arsenal

Players from both teams got away with offenses that should have resulted in earlier punishments. It was fortunate that no serious injuries occurred, as Kavanagh appeared entirely out of his depth and unable to handle the situation.

Pep Guardiola

While he may not openly admit it, Manchester City's manager must have been hoping for Arsenal to drop points in this game. However, the result now indicates that City will need to maintain their efforts until the very end to secure the title.

Pep Guardiola

City faces a challenging away fixture against Everton over the weekend, which is sandwiched between their two Champions League semi-final matches against Real Madrid. Guardiola would have welcomed the chance to rest some of his key players at Goodison Park, but Arsenal's victory has altered the situation, and he is now less likely to have that luxury.
