Austria, led by Ralf Rangnick, came back from a goal down in the second half to defeat Estonia twice in a row to start their campaign. A late Michael Gregoritsch goal won a crucial three points for Austria.

Austria vs Estonia Highlights

Due to a knee injury, talisman Marcel Sabitzer, who had just scored two goals and assisted on another in a win over Azerbaijan, was unavailable for Austria in this match. When Michael Gregoritsch, making his debut on the penalty spot after being clumsily fouled after some deft passing play by Vlasiy Sinyavskiy, crashed his spot kick against the bar, boss Rangnick, who might have been managing Sabitzer at club level if things had gone according to plan at Manchester United, found himself cursing his bad luck.

Austria vs Estonia Highlights

The fright didn't seem to dissuade Estonia, who were playing their own game and were rated 109th in FIFA, and they unexpectedly took the lead thanks to a dead ball scenario. Rauno Sappinen made no mistakes in putting the ball past Heinz Lindner after it was floated in from a deep position and met by two tremendous headers.

Austria vs Estonia Summary

Knowing that the quality of the opponent would be higher after the interval, Rangnick made two substitutions without hesitation, bringing on David Alaba, who is currently one cap shy of reaching 100 for Das Team. But, it was the arrival of the less well-known 21-year-old striker Junior Adamu that almost offered the solution, slipping in Gregoritsch who strayed wide of the left post. A more tough opportunity later in the disappointing evening for the SC Freiburg player went beyond the other post from a distance.

Austria vs Estonia Summary

Florian Kainz, a replacement, helped the home team draw even, which was quite fortunate. Stefan Posch's deflected shot was only parried by Karl Hein, allowing Kainz to seize the opportunity and score his first goal for his country in 23 attempts. With Gregoritsch finally scoring his well-deserved goal on a deflected shot, the Sinisärgid were on the verge of matching their point total from the previous qualification campaign but were ultimately denied a point.
