Manchester United made a bold decision on Friday evening when they turned down West Ham's £20 million ($25.7m) bid for Harry Maguire, but was it the correct move?

The past week has been eventful for Harry Maguire, having been stripped of the Manchester United captaincy and then receiving a bid from West Ham, which the club swiftly rejected.

Man Utd bid for Harry Maguire on Friday evening.

According to reports, this is not the start of a prolonged transfer saga. It appears that West Ham will not be returning with another bid, which means United may have missed their only chance to offload Maguire this summer.

One might understand why the Red Devils would expect a higher sum for their former captain. After all, he still holds the record as the most expensive defender of all time, although Josko Gvardiol could soon challenge that record.

However, taking a simplistic view solely based on his price tag overlooks the broader context. Maguire was not a regular starter last season, and at times, manager Ten Hag even preferred Luke Shaw in the center-back position. During this summer, when United has already cut ties with David de Gea, West Ham offered them a perfect opportunity to part ways with another underperforming high-earning player.

Yet, United now find themselves stuck with Maguire. They must now hope, rather than expect, that another club will come forward with an offer closer to their valuation in the next month.

What are your thoughts? Did United miss a golden opportunity here, or are they justified in holding out for a better offer?
