Wayne Rooney saw his Plymouth side lose once again.

Plymouth Argyle are facing growing calls to part ways with Wayne Rooney after their latest heavy defeat to Coventry City. The Pilgrims remain stuck at the bottom of the Championship, and there was no festive cheer as Frank Lampard's side cruised to a 4-0 victory. This loss, following a series of poor results, has intensified the pressure on Rooney, who has been in charge since the summer.

Plymouth have not won since early November, but Rooney has remained defiant, insisting he is planning for the January transfer window. Despite his determination, chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" rang out throughout the match.

After another humbling defeat, fans are increasingly turning on the former Manchester United star, whose managerial career still lacks significant success. One fan commented, "To give the club a chance to stay up, sack Rooney," while another said, "Rooney isn't a coach. Time for him to do the decent thing and resign."

The frustration was palpable, with some supporters arguing that failing to sack Rooney would send them down to League One. "Sack Rooney, appoint Schuey, and we stay up. It's so simple," said another fan.

Amid boos from the fanbase, Rooney's future is looking increasingly uncertain, and with his previous Championship experience at Derby and Birmingham, the pressure to turn things around has never been greater.

Steven Schumacher is one of the names fans are calling for to return to Plymouth, and he remains without a job. Schumacher, who led Plymouth from League One to the Championship in 2023, left for Stoke City but was dismissed in September.

Before the defeat to Coventry, Rooney said: “I know a lot of families and supporters enjoy the Christmas period – and it’s even better when you win. So, the next two games are a good challenge for us, both away from home, and hopefully we can secure that first away win of the season.”
